After tragedies there is often a call for action any action- regardless of how ineffective it might be. This week Wayne LaPierre of the NRA made a speech in which he called for armed cops in schools and it was ridiculed by Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Sen-elect Chris Murphy of Connecticut. Blumenthal called it sadly and shamefully inadequate. Murphy called it revolting and tone-deaf. The New York Daily News called LaPierre the craziest man on Earth. Lets examine those accusations.
Among LaPierre's remarks:
- We care about our money, so we protect our banks with armed guards. American airports, office buildings, power plants, court houses, even sports stadiums are all protected by armed security.- We care about our money, so we protect our banks with armed guards. American airports, office buildings, power plants, court houses, even sports stadiums are all protected by armed security.
- A gun in the hands of a Secret Service agent protecting the President isn't a bad word. A gun in the hands of a soldier protecting the United States isn't a bad word. And when you hear the glass breaking in your living room at 3 a.m. and call 911, you won't be able to pray hard enough for a gun in the hands of a good guy to get there fast enough to protect you.
So why is the idea of a gun good when it's used to protect our President or our country or our police, but bad when it's used to protect our children in their schools?
Crazy, right?
Right now 30% of schools have a police officer. Police chiefs in both St. Louis and Cincinnati have called for training and arming teachers. President Bill Clinton passed a program called COPS in schools and it placed 2200 police officers in schools. You may have read that the attack at Columbine wasnt prevented by a police officer, but ask anyone blurting that out if Columbine would have been better off without a police officer present. Who knows how many more would have been killed without a cop present? Neil Gardner, the cop who was on duty at Columbine on the day of the attack thinks armed cops in schools is a good idea.
Are they all crazy?
Gun free zones? They are magnets for killers. John Lott writes:
"With just one single exception, the attack on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson in 2011, every public shooting since at least 1950 in the U.S. in which more than three people have been killed has taken place where citizens are not allowed to carry guns."
This from the NY Times:

Thanks for the map.
Criminals are deterred by NOT knowing exactly who is armed among the people they intend to victimize. At Columbine, the killers knew Gardner’s whereabouts by knowing whether his security car was in the lot in its usual place, or not, and could time their attack when he was gone, as I believe they did.
But they also knew to expect him back and to prepare to ambush him, which they did. Just knowing he was coming back armed diverted their attention at least partially from killing students.
What if the killers didn’t know how many administrative staff in the school were also carrying? What if it could have been quite a few, in addition to the visible deputy?
Rules of Engagement. I grew up in NYC and went to high school in the suburbs. Rifle team members like my cousin brought their rifles on the bus. And this is liberaltopia though it was 45 years ago.
End the deadly gun free zone loophole.
THIS IS CRAZY -
It happens in Ct where there are very strict gun control laws and in a ‘gun free zone’!
NOW obzoz and his libtards want strict gun control for the entire country so this will happen often ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY!
And here you are crying about my posts.
What's the difference? You see something you don't like and post accordingly.
Same same.
My eyes are dry.
The blogger’s threads have purpose. They inform.
Yours don’t seem to have any.
I mean, one would think if freerepublic cared that bloggers were linking and excerpting their blogs here, then freerepublic would ban them and stop that practice, but they are not banned, so...yeah.
Stopped buying the NY Post yesterday, when they called LaPierre a gun nut on the front page. Used to buy the Daily News sometimes when they were out of the Post—never will again.
Started buying the Journal at twice the price. It’s not pure but it doesn’t scream nonsense at passersby on its front page.
Also tried to join the NRA but its website was not working—probably too many hits. Will try to join by phone after Christmas.
I’ll do whatever I can. Sign petitions, whatever. This shooting in Newtown is what the Left has been waiting for and we can’t let them win this one.
I guess you didn't read the links I provided.
Regardless, you are certainly free to object to my posts just as I am free to object to blogpimps.
Now dry your little eyes and have a merry Christmas.
You guessed correctly.
Except about needing to dry my eyes.
Merry Christmas to you too, humblegunner.
President of the stupid needs a newspaper of the stupid
