After tragedies there is often a call for action – any action- regardless of how ineffective it might be. This week Wayne LaPierre of the NRA made a speech in which he called for armed cops in schools and it was ridiculed by Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Sen-elect Chris Murphy of Connecticut. Blumenthal called it “sadly and shamefully inadequate.” Murphy called it “revolting and tone-deaf.” The New York Daily News called LaPierre the “craziest man on Earth.” Let’s examine those accusations.
Among LaPierre's remarks:

- A gun in the hands of a Secret Service agent protecting the President isn't a bad word. A gun in the hands of a soldier protecting the United States isn't a bad word. And when you hear the glass breaking in your living room at 3 a.m. and call 911, you won't be able to pray hard enough for a gun in the hands of a good guy to get there fast enough to protect you.
So why is the idea of a gun good when it's used to protect our President or our country or our police, but bad when it's used to protect our children in their schools?
Crazy, right?
Right now 30% of schools have a police officer. Police chiefs in both St. Louis and Cincinnati have called for training and arming teachers. President Bill Clinton passed a program called “COPS in schools” and it placed 2200 police officers in schools. You may have read that the attack at Columbine wasn’t prevented by a police officer, but ask anyone blurting that out if Columbine would have been better off without a police officer present. Who knows how many more would have been killed without a cop present? Neil Gardner, the cop who was on duty at Columbine on the day of the attack thinks armed cops in schools is a good idea.
Are they all crazy?
Gun free zones? They are magnets for killers. John Lott writes:
"With just one single exception, the attack on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson in 2011, every public shooting since at least 1950 in the U.S. in which more than three people have been killed has taken place where citizens are not allowed to carry guns."

We had kids bring their .22 rifles to school. We had rifle teams in our high schools in Alaska with indoor shooting ranges and never had a problem.

In response to your headline, “Vile NRA nut blames everyone and everything EXCEPT the GUNS”
I performed a scientific experiment regarding the sort of gun used in the CT elementary school shooting.
First, a description of the environment: My apartment bedroom, in a suburb less than 3 blocks from a high school, and less than 6 blocks from an elementary school. Over the weekend, I loaded my Ruger Vaquero, a single action revolver, with a single round of ammunition, positioning the cylinder so the round would be fired should the revolver “try anything.” This is as close as I can some to a single shot weapon, and the hammer must be drawn back before the round can be fired. I then left the revolver on my bed for 3 hours, and at no time did it try to attack me or any of the school children.
Next, I loaded a 30 round magazine for my “clone” AR-15 (identical to the Bushmaster used in the murders) with 30 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition (again, nearly identical to the ammunition used), inserted the magazine and chambered a round. I left the AR-15 in the same place where I had left the revolver, and at no time did the AR-15 attempt to attack me or any of the nearby school children.
From my observations, I can detect no animosity or propensity for either of these weapons to attack anyone, let alone young children. Now, I suppose that one could claim that my “scientific experiment” was flawed, since school was not in session. and I will concede to that, should someone actually be crazy enough to claim it.
The simple fact is that inanimate objects can NOT be blamed for anything, unless they malfunction, and that doesn’t appear to be the case. Just like you don’t blame a match for starting a forest fire, nor the paper clip which burned your fingers when little, after sticking it into a light socket. It’s not the fault of a hammer when you use it improperly and crush your finger. It’s not the fault of the saw which cuts off your hand due to your ineptitude with power tools.
The simple fact is a gun is an inanimate object, a tool. And as with any tool, it can be used for good or evil. Bad people have a propensity for using tools to do evil. Good people can put those same tools to use to save lives and property. I suggest you ask any of the Korean shop owners in LA after the Rodney King riots if they “needed” their so-called “assault weapons” when confronting mobs alone, after the police evacuated much of the city. Find out if the people who lost their businesses if they could have uses a weapon, preferably one that could protect them against a mob. I would guess that Reginald Denny might have liked to have the option of having one with him, to give him a chance to protect himself from the mob that stopped his truck, dragged him out, beating him and hitting him in the head with a brick.
I contend that the moron who came up with the headline is the greatest idiot on earth.

Sens. Murphy and Blumenthal should declare their offices and personal space gun free zones and order their security to disarm. Only fair.
Thanks for posting, I'd never seen that. It's hard to imagine being involved in a similar scenario. It's always easy to look back and say, could have, would have, should have.

Killing fields is a darned good description - that’s just what they are.
Just like if Susanna Gratia, or any other diner at the Luby's had been allowed to legally carry a concealed handgun in Texas, or if there had been a single armed commuter on the train with Collin Ferguson, the results may well have been very different, including not having Carolyn Mcarthy as a congress-critter.

In 1975, I was on the SouthWest High School JROTC Rifle Team, and we practiced with rifles in the school basement every day. And in my freshman year, I had a speech class where we had to do a demonstration, using "props," and mine was on gun safety. I did have to get permission, but I brought a rifle and a shotgun to school. I did have to keep them in the office before and after the class, but I brought them from home on the school bus (needed permission for that too).
But that was in Kansas City, MO in 1975.

Despite what the MSM and Dem Dolts have been saying all day, I consider this proof that the armed deputy saved lives by distracting one of the killers several times to exchange fire thus allowing some students to escape, and also causing the killer to expend rounds not at students:

As Gardner stepped out of his patrol car, Eric Harris turned his attention from shooting into the west doors of the high school to the student parking lot and to the deputy. Gardner, particularly visible in the bright yellow shirt of the community resource officer uniform, was the target of Harris’ bullets. Harris fired about 10 shots from his rifle at Gardner before his gun jammed. Although Gardner’s patrol car was not hit by bullets, two vehicles that he was parked behind were hit by Harris’ gunfire. Investigators later found two bullet holes in each of the cars.
Officer Exchanges Gunfire
Gardner, seeing Harris working with his gun, leaned over the top of the car and fired four shots. He was 60 yards from the gunman. Harris spun hard to the right and Gardner momentarily thought he had hit him. Seconds later, Harris began shooting again at the deputy.
After the exchange of gunfire, Harris ran back into the building. Gardner was able to get on the police radio and called for assistance from other Sheriff’s units. “Shots in the building. I need someone in the south lot with me.”
By 11:30, within four minutes of Gardner’s reports of shots being fired in the building and the need for additional units, six Jefferson County deputies, including Gardner, were on scene. Gardner had already exchanged gunfire with Harris twice, once when Harris shot at him as he arrived in the south parking lot and again from inside the west entrance doors. Smoker had shot at Harris during the second exchange between Gardner and Harris. Taborsky, Smoker and Searle were providing immediate cover and evacuating students as they fled the school. Searle, with the help of Sheriff’s Deputy Neal Schwieterman and several Denver officers, gave first priority to the wounded, transporting them in their patrol cars to emergency medical triage being set up to the south. The armed deputies had also set up an inner perimeter around the school, covering the school exits on the south, west and east sides in case the suspects would attempt to escape.
Gardner called dispatch. All units around him were under fire.
My Brother took his .22 Rifle to School on Long Island, New York back in the late 50’s.
They had a Range in the Gym Basement for the Shooting Club.
He never had a problem carrying his Rifle to School. No shocked faces, no Police, no Media reports, just another day in the America that used to be.
A free country has a government that is created by and constrained by laws. A dictator or tyrant circumvents those laws, or ignores them entirely. Kind of like what Obamugabe is doing.
