I'm sure there was an affair and Obama’s henchmen have used to it get Petraeus to resign before the Benghazi hearings begin. I would question the intelligence (or honesty) of anyone who doesn't see it this way.

Agree. he didn't have to make an excuse. He could simply have resigned to let the president form a new team for the next term.

Unless they have some even worse blackmail on him, and forced him to resign, with the affair as a cover story.

What his reason was for announcing it at this particular time, thats something else. Yeah, isn't it just soooo "Convenient" that he chose now to bare his soul.
The only reason I could accept is that somehow his wife found out and threatened to go public.
Other than that, someone has put pressure on him to resign, (and do so post haste) so that he "might" escape having to testify.
