I had the same feeling about Powell when Bush 41 appointed him head of the Joint Chiefs in 1989. I was in Texas at the time visiting my aunt and I turned to her and my mother saying, “well, he’s an ‘affirmative action appointee.’” They both agreed. I was 23 then, half a lifetime ago for me. We need it, because as Paul said, Satan will disguise himself as an angel of light. He also tells us that in the end times God will send a strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
We have the light, so we will be able to distinguish between good and evil, even when others whom we have respect for cannot.
