2012 Flashback: Free Republic: 2 Weeks Left of Relevancy Unless You Fix It [updates at 130, 270]
October 23, 2012 | Self

Posted on 10/23/2012 3:58:44 AM PDT by PittsburghAfterDark

The 4th and final of the Presidential and Vice Presidential debates have come and gone for 2012.

Here are the three things we can walk away with.

- Romney can't lose a debate coin toss, going 3 for 3. Which of course means nothing.

- Obama gets more moderated debate time, going 3 for 3 in the time column. Which of course means nothing.

- Free Republic crashes before any debate and doesn't get back to normal until dawn the next day.

I would like to state that I have been here since the 2004 election season. I can't lay claim to being an old timer here compared to some of the posters here. I can safely say though that I am not a spur of the moment account meant to come here and spam, insult and run away.

Here's my point; Free Republic is in danger of not being relevant and it's purely because of technical reasons.

I know your technical team or advisor is trying like mad to isolate why this site is unavailable for hours on end surrounding the debates this year. It's not working.

This debate season for Free Republic has been the equivalent of having a TV network go out for a wild card round, divisional round and conference or league championship. The network knew the times of the contest, they knew tons of people would be watching, they knew where the technical problems might arise yet failed 4 times over the course of every scheduled event.

Now the Super Bowl of American politics is 2 weeks away and the same team that has aired loading screens for every head to head political contest this year must realize this simple fact; if you're not up and running on election night 2012 you might as well close the door on any thought of continuing your political relevance.

Online communities do not build themselves overnight but they can collapse overnight. As inconceivable as it may be this could be a swan song moment that you were warned about, tried to prevent yet ultimately could not control. If your traffic can't get to your site, you have no site.

If you fail in giving voice to this community during what should or could be a glorious night for America your role in history will be noteworthy, just like print edition of Newsweek's coverage of the Presidential inauguration in 2013. Non-existent.

History will indeed be made on November 6th because of the nature of the event. The question Free Republic needs to determine is if it is going to report history or become part of it.

“And nobody thinks Zero’s minions couldn’t be behind these failures?”

Of course they are. 0bama has hired the best IT he can find. They want to shut down not only FR, but the Internet.

We may end up having to go absolute low tech.

Don’t run now. Stand fast.

It’s not just Free Republic. All my favorite sites were impossible to get into. My theory is that it’s all the tweeting etc. Eats up a lot of bandwidth. Some of these sites are still hard to get into.

Zombies, eh? Been killing the dreaded daemons and then failing to reap the zombies? Can’t kill zombies, they’re already dead. aPARENTly there was a failure to call...Wait! Its so sad when a child dies prematurely and their stuff is left all over and never cleaned up. When that happens, the parent must die too. Sad, init?

Now that was a silly post in a thread that is dealing with a very serious issue.

In the interest of getting this thread back on track I offer the following suggestion:

If JohnRob can find a way to fine tune the non parity interface bus and adjust the timing chain so that it has minimal critical-speed lateral variation it would allow the NOR gated hexadecimal data injector to smooth out the bit-flow.

This might severely limit or even prevent the development of good old fashioned Barkhausen oscillations in the random orbital buffers.

As anyone with a wit of technical expertise can clearly see, this has the potential to increase the speed of the entire FR server system by at least 93%.

One other thing to consider: It may be that we also have a Viking Kitty who has gone “rogue” and is running loose in the system, wreaking havoc randomly “zotting” important data bits and clogging up the fans with fur.

(I don’t understand why nobody ever listens to me)

Wow. I just fully read that for the first time. What a totally awesome compliment. Thank you very much, Laz. I wish I had not glanced so carelessly & responded quickly with BIAB.

I would bet on you too, for the record.

I believe the servers are located in San Jose CA. At least they were in the past.

I’m sure John has ruled out zombie processes, but your intended humor is actually an often overlooked answer to performance problems. Zombie processes can really chew up resources.

Roughly 11 million hits. Peak bandwidth was 34 Mbps. Peak requests per second was in the neighborhood of 230. 72 ounces of Pepsi, 2 ham sandwiches, and countless trick-or-treats.

Btw, that 13.8 Mbps average is for the entire day, if you add all the samples from the first second of the day to the last. Pretty impressive. Not really a practical measurement, though. By the hour averages are reasonable measures of load.

FWIW, you’re welcome. It was a very broad description intended for the general public and not my fellow geeks .. who very graciously didn’t reply with, “Well, duh!”

Heh.

Since I cannot get on FREEREPUBLIC during these big events I go to FACEBOOK where I have a network of people whose opinions I enjoy just as much.. Plus I can see the posts and tweets of pundits and politicians. So you are correct, FreeRepublic will never be the same, at least to me. I do not spend nearly as much time he as I used to. I have been a member since 1998. You must keep up with the times or the times pass you by.

but he raised important points

Really? What's important about this...Here's my point; Free Republic is in danger of not being relevant and it's purely because of technical reasons.

We cannot be a ‘dysfunctional family’ where we cannot honestly talk about real problems.

Who stopped PittsburghAfterDark talking about the real problem as he sees it? NO ONE! It's all there to see. Seems you only want only 'certain people' to be honest and post what they think.

I honestly think if you or PittsburghAfterDark think YOU OR HE care more about FR than JimR or JohnR, you are both wrong and think too highly of yourself. Anyone saying FR is in danger of not being relevant is suspect in my book!

In my family those we care, encourage and support others through crises and would NEVER say anyone/anything is in danger of not being relevant. My enemies would, however.

So much for your... We cannot be a ‘dysfunctional family’, you sent it to the wrong poster.
