Lockheed Martin and other defense contractors backed down from issuing layoff notices to employees on Monday after the Obama administration promised to pick up the tab for severance costs resulting from sequestration.
The news provided welcome relief for President Obama, who faced the prospect of mass layoff notices in battleground states just days before the election, and outraged Republicans, who accused the administration of bending the law to hide job losses from the public.
The White House issued guidance on Friday that said the government would cover the costs if contracts are canceled and layoffs occur due to the automatic
spending cuts set for 2013. But that offer would be null and void for any contractor that issues job-loss warnings before sequestration begins.
Sequestration has become a potent political issue in Virginia, a swing state both Obama and GOP nominee Mitt Romney are desperate to win. Thousands of defense-industry employees live in Virginias northern suburbs, and the cuts from sequestration could hit the state especially hard.
Romney has forcefully attacked Obama over sequestration during visits to Virginia, saying the president is standing idly by as the nations military force is hollowed out.

Where the hell in Bonehead ?
I would think most of the workers would know their jobs are in jeopardy one way or another IF this baffoon is re-elected. Well, maybe the assembly line workers might be fed a line from their union, but surely management and other departments are wise to their chances under a second term with the one who would love to see defense cut to the bone.
Lockheed. Another American icon down the drain for selling out to the Dictator.
Boehner and McConnell both need to be replaced. Regardless of what happens with Romney, although I’m praying we win the Senate and the White House but those two gotta go.
People I know at Boeing say they have to give a 60 day notice of layoff. What’s Obamagabe doing?
This is crooked as a snake. Any contractor issuing the letters to employees would be following the law and therefore not subject to legal liability.
He who eats my bread sings my song.
All these cuts will be across the board.
I really don’t want to lose my job because Congress can’t pass a damn budget!
No!
As the Senator so clearly points out here:
So, I’d be looking for a revised statement, even though the “guidance” indicates there won’t be any contract terminations until 2 Jan. 2013.
Why, oh why did we nominate another born loser?
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) says that he will do anything he can to block the Obama administration from reimbursing defense contractors for severance costs if the firms dont send layoff notices to employees.
I will do everything in my power to make sure not one taxpayer dollar is spent reimbursing companies for failure to comply with WARN Act, Graham told The Hill in a phone interview Monday. That is so beyond the pale I think its patently illegal.

Severance costs resulting from sequestration...well isn’t Obama admitting that there will be layoffs?
This. This is the reason I can’t vote for Obama more than anything else. Ours was once a nation of laws, not men. Now it is a nation of deals, thousands of them, all arbitrary, none of them more reliable or repeatable than the moment or whim of whomever is in power at the moment. This is the destruction of a republic in a nutshell.
The Romney campaign should sieze on this, present a Romney administration as a polar opposite and present it clearly: if you want an administration that exempts preferred companies from nationwide health insurance mandates, ignores contract law to fill the coffers of unions in bankruptcy proceedings, and muscles private industry into breaking the law with the assurance that they’ll look past the lawbrwaking, vote for the other guy. If you want the law to apply evenly to all Americans, all corporations, all industries, vote for me.
If I were elected, I’d have them arrested for conspiracy. Then see who talks and go from there.
I guess he’s not as worthless as he seems half the time....
Don’t kiss the cream-puff’s ass!
