At Writers Bloc, I often talk about the marketing of books, because it seems so many authors still dont understand the importance of it.
Thats why, this week, I am going to touch on a couple points made by Michael Hyatt in his new book, Platform. To be fair, Ive also reviewed it, but in this space, its contents are relevant. I wouldnt agree with Hyatt about everything, of course, but frankly, his publishing knowledge is a resource that writers should use until theres nothing left to wring-out.
Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World, is a true insiders account of the value of marketing in an age of intense competition. Hyatts new book is jammed with valuable tips, but today, I want to focus on only one (dont want to give away too much of the book): setting up a Facebook Fan Page.
Like you, I speak to writers all the time who have varying degrees of disgust for social media sites like Facebook. Ive heard the arguments, pro and con, and for me, I only care that FB is a powerful tool for promoting my agenda (still not sure what that is!).
So lets start with this: For those of you who are willing to create a Facebook page, lets move along...

Or, you could put some links on your FreeRepublic Profile page and then beg people to go there and find your books and buy them ;)

Thanks for the article. I just put Hyatt’s book on my iPad.
It IS a noisy world out there and my book is moving as slow as Christmas. I wrote it specifically to hurt Omaba’s chances for re-election: http://lostinzombieland.com.
I’ve posted news of my book twice on FR and it never was posted. Pimping a blog is one thing. Trying to let your fellow Freepers know that you’ve written a book designed to strike a blow to save the republic is another. Didn’t do it for the money, that’s for sure.
But I’m a writer and couldn’t sit by and not do something. Still, it seems pitiful that FR doesn’t have a format for promoting work by the Freeper community. There are some good writers here!

Ask an old hand, humblegunner, how to go about that the right way.
Thank you for the compliment.
I bought Platform and thought it contained very, very basic information. Publishers nowadays look for authors who already have a platform, meaning Twitter and Facebook followers/fans, a blog, etc. There is a lot of support out there for indie authors but sooner or later, every author needs SOMETHING to offer other than just their book.

That makes just all kinds of sense.
