No, it's not an early Halloween prank. The Associated Press is reporting that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has launched a new "public health campaign" and has "urged citizens to prepare for a zombie apocalypse."
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have gotten into the act as well and have launched a series of seminars and social media campaigns on zombie attack survival.
A CDC pamphlet, "Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse" gives a history of zombies and checklists of all the survival items that citizens should have in stock in case of a zombie attack, is presently available online here.
What's gotten into DHS, FEMA and the CDC? Obviously, federal government officials do not recognize the existence of zombies, at least not officially, but DHS, FEMA and CDC are apparently using the zombie-angle as a lame marketing ploy.
According to the Associated Press, our disaster response agencies are under the impression that if citizens are "prepared for a zombie attack, the same preparations will help during a hurricane, pandemic, earthquake or terrorist attack;" and undoubtedly, the approaching of the Halloween holiday and the recent public infatuation with all things undead, more than likely played a role in inspiring our government to push the marketing ploy.

Well, unlike a lot of what the feds do, there’s at least a chance that something good comes out of it.

It was considered “Red paranoia” and “xenophobia” when Republican presidents pushed for such preparedness for decades (including post 9-11-2001).

The CDC has had instructions on how to survive a zombie invasion on its website for well over a year now.
It’s an attempt to get around the normally dry subject matter of disaster preparedness. Most people aren’t very interested in preparing for a disaster until it is on top of them. By putting the subject within the context of a zombie invasion, the CDC hopes more people will actually read it... and more of them will be inspired to put those disaster kits together.
