This past week gay advocate Wayne Besen ran a commentary piece entitled, "Will Chick-fil-A Dig In or Dig Out of the Hole?". I wanted to comment on Besen's commentary which appears in HuffPost Gay Voices (which FReepers may link to but not post as articles).
Besen believes the company appeared to "take steps in a positive direction last week, when Dan Cathy "welcomed campus leaders to a private luncheon in Atlanta to discuss diversity, hospitality and the opportunity to find common ground." "
The meeting was held in secret and included among other groups the LGBT student advocacy group Campus Pride.
Besen makes no bones about this being a slap in the face to what he calls "the Huckabee crowd". I will admit the seeming capitulation was unwelcome to my own thinking.
Says Besen: "If Chick-fil-A truly desires rejoining mainstream America, it will have to come to terms with the fact that it will let down its most ardent defenders. Even a whiff of "capitulation" will infuriate anti-gay activists, who view the company as a beacon of hope in a secular world."
"If Cathy budges even an inch, extremist groups are going to squawk louder than a chicken in a slaughter barn, so Chick-fil-A might as well go all the way and renounce donations to homophobic hate groups and rejoin civilization." ....
He goes on to smirk at Scott Lively's idea - voiced in a recent WND Op-Ed piece - that the Chick-Fil-A August was a sign of changing times and a reversal of LGBT rights. (I had hoped the same thing and thus did not exactly appreciate Cathy's meeting or Besen's smirking).
Besen ends his piece by comparing Chick Fil A's position to that of the fort of Alamo in the Texas Revolution of 1836: According to Besen , if Chick-Fil-A wants to "rejoin civilization" it will have to become gay friendly and to "stop funding hate groups". On the other hand, if it seeks to become "the Alamo of the far right" it will fall as the fort did. Any thoughts would be welcome, and of course I am hoping he is self-deluded and that Cathy's seeming capitulation was nothing of the kind.

Remember in their mindset, a lie isn’t a lie if they think it helps their cause. The ends justify any and all means.
Absolutely. They always up the ante until their requirement of total acceptance is met.
Good point.
Yes, they do lie and I suppose this might be another.
Yes, we’re all in good company. ;-)
They are the Borg of our time: “Resistance is futile. You must be absorbed.” (Or, for you older Trekkies, followers of Landrew—or whatever that guy’s name was (”We are of the Body...YOU are not of the Body?!”)
Well said. That’s it, in a nutshell.
Legitimizing a relationship between a bug chaser and his gift giver by calling it marriage is not my idea of rejoining civilization.
Chik-Fil-A has a large media presence and is doing great business in upstate South Carolina.
Great to hear.
