Why does the GOP worry about it? Don't they have a staunch conservative as a nominee? They shouldn't lose any conservative voters, should they?

All that could be true and it doesn’t change the fact that what the GOP is doing here reeks of goosestepping and enabling acts. Either they’re for free elections or they’re not. Are we or are we not better than the Democrats on stuff like this? Because this stuff WILL come back to bite us in the ass.
