GLAAD is criticizing a Utah NBC affiliates decision not to broadcast The New Normal this fall.
"While audiences, critics and advertisers have all supported LGBT stories, KSL is demonstrating how deeply out of touch it is with the rest of the country, the group's president says.
Ryan Murphy and Ali Adler's new comedy, which tells the story of a single mother who becomes a surrogate for a same-sex couple, was deemed inappropriate by Salt Lake City-based KSL-TV.
"Same-sex families are a beloved part of American television thanks to shows like Modern Family, Glee and Greys Anatomy," GLAAD president Herndon Graddick said in a statement. "While audiences, critics and advertisers have all supported LGBT stories, KSL is demonstrating how deeply out of touch it is with the rest of the country."
Jeff Simpson, CEO of KSL parent company Bonneville International, revealed Friday the station planned not to air New Normal, citing crude language and offensive characterizations. The same station decided not to air NBC drama The Playboy Club last fall.
After viewing the pilot episode of The New Normal, we have made the decision to keep it off our fall schedule," Simpson said. "For our brand, this program simply feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time.
Graddick suggested that a meeting between Simpson and local LGBT families might change the CEOs opinion.
We know that if he would, he would see that not only are our families normal, but by citing 'crude and rude' content and refusing to affirm LGBT families, KSL and Mr. Simpson are sending a dangerous message to Utah, Graddick said. They should make that right."
New Normal previously came under fire from the conservative group One Million Moms, which called for a boycott last month. Castmember Ellen Barkin took to Twitter o Friday to shore up support for the show being broadcast on KLS.
"Anyone in Utah interested in @NBCTheNewNormal please clog up @ksl5tv feed 4 their blatantly homophic decision 2 not air the show #KSLBigots," she wrote. She also tweeted: "Shame on u @kslcom not airing @NBCTheNewNormal So L&O SVU (rape & child murder) is ok? But loving gay couple having a baby is inappropriate?"
But Simpson has argued that in the age of digital distribution, anyone who wants to view New Normal will be able to do so online or through means other than KLS.
She doesn't seem to grasp that Law and Order SVU would be conveying rape and child murder as heinous and criminal. The New Normal attempts to portray gay men hiring a surrogate as "the new normal" when many don't want youth to see this as such.
The show is totally pandering and self-willed political & social promotion, not “representation” of anyone, and not representing a “new” “normal”.
I saw an ad for this sick crap the other day. How in God’s name do these networks survive?
IMHO, KSL is demonstrating how deeply out of touch NBC is with decent people.
“Same-sex families are a beloved part of American television thanks to shows like Modern Family, Glee and Greys Anatomy,”
Um. No.
Perhaps Castmember Ellen Barkin should go invest her money in a broadcasting company and she can show whatever she wishes.
In the meantime, she can continue to produce her crappy show and shut her pie hole about what they choose to broadcast on the network which they own.
Ms. barkin should take the advice of another liberal icon “Liz Lemon” and just suck it!
So does anyone in Utah really want to see this perverted crap?
Well said.
Very true, but the more they push such a purview as the new normal, the more it will one day really begin to be seen as this. We learned that from the other crap they normalized.
Commiecast now runs NbC universal after GE sold it off for 30 billion .. if I’m not mistaken.
It’s all about being seen as ‘normal’ yaknow..
I don’t watch any shows that have queers in them.
Maybe I am not normal, well, I don’t want to be normal if that is what we judge normal by.
The entertainment world is filled with queers, nepotism, liberals ,miscegenation, and a lot of other things I don’t consider normal, It is no wonder that thjey push their agenda. The shame is they are winning.
Corporate has made it my responsibility today to put an end to
10,000 years of being weirded out by gays.
I don’t watch any shows that have queers in them.

LMAO
Can you please cite your evidence for this statement. Not just wishing about how you'd like things to be, but the real, hard, unadulterated, factual evidence based on a representative sample of the adult population in the U.S.
Umm, just as I thought. You don't have any evidence, do you.
Yeah, I think GLAAD has jumped to a conclusion there. Just because it is being forced on people doesn’t mean they have become “beloved” of same.
Right, they push their agenda, they skew their polls, they make up their own fairy tale, and insist its true. Just like I might want to insist I can fly to the moon.
In the end, their self-delusion will catch up with them. For the times they are a changin.
What does a plastic food wrap have to do with what’s on TV? So now commercial products are dictating what should be shown on TV?
GLAAD - not GLAD? Sorry!
[You can use GLAD To wrap up the crap tha GLAAD promotes and throw it down the crapper, so there is something to be salvaged out of this insanity]
ROTFLMAO - you are funny, brother!
Anybody who subscribes to cable/satellite, or watches network television at all, is supporting this crap, whether you think you are or not.
