The thought of Jerusalem being the capital of Israel is so deeply repugnant to the Obama administration that Press Secretary Jay Carney couldn't 'speak' it, wouldn't confirm it - but couldn't ignore it either, because he was asked repeatedly, and heatedly, for the White House position: is Jerusalem still the capital of Israel, or has that position changed? It was HAWT in that press room today (you don't often see a White House presser like this one). All Carney would say is that the White House position has not changed. Today Mitt Romney stated for all the world to hear:
"It is a deeply moving experience to be in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel."
Its a factnot an opinionthat Jerusalem is Israels capital. Anyone who insists otherwise is in denial. You may wish Tel Aviv was its capital. You may even wish a united Al Quds was the capital of the Arab state of Palestine. But those things can only be true in an alternate universe or in the future. In this universe, in 2012, Israel exists and Jerusalem is its capital. The short story of control of Jerusalem is this: When the Arab nations came against Israel immediately after Statehood, Jordan took East Jerusalem from Israel and annexed it for Jordan. In 1967, during the Six Day War, Israel took East Jerusalem from Jordan and annexed it for Israel...and so it has been ever since.Only one of Israels national government buildingsthe ministry of defenseis in Tel Aviv. All the others are in Jerusalem. And all of them are on the western side of the city inside the internationally recognized borders. The only people who dispute Israels right to exist in west Jerusalem are those who dispute Israels right to exist anywhere.
War is hell when you lose, and even worse when you start the war, have incredibly more power than those you are waging war against, and lose anyway.
Hundreds of years earlier when the Romans destroyed the Jewish temple, many Jews remained in the Holy Land, along with Arabs, but technically not "Palestinians." Muslims built their mosque on the site of the second Jewish Temple and so it stands today.
Britain and Australia fought the Battle of Jerusalem in 1917. They won. The League of Nations charged Britain with creating a homeland for Jews. As the deal for Israeli statehood was in the works, there would have been no Jordan had it not been for the Brits allowing the Saudis to talk them out of what is now Jordan, which even then did not include Jerusalem. The French, as well, played a part in the plan to take away parts of the Jewish homeland, before it was their homeland. But once there was a Jordan, all of the land west of the Jordan River was Israel. Legally, the documents remain the same today, even if the borders do not.
With the creation of the official Nation of Israel, the people who lost their place of worship to the Romans recovered a homeland that had been laid waste and was occupied mainly by bedouins. Today Jews administer Jerusalem, their capital, and allow all people to share one of the holiest places on earth. What do you think would happen if Muslims were in control?
Carney wouldn’t answer the question because to do so would legitimize Israel’s existence and that is something this administration does not want to do; it would rather appease its Arab brothers.
