Today, CNN President Jim Walton, a 30-year veteran of the network, announced his retirement at the end of the year.
In his announcement, Walton admitted that the network needs new thinking, which is quite an understatement. The network has descended into the depths of despair after years as the undisputed news giant at the top of the ratings. In fact, Ted Turner, the founder of CNN, invented the cable news format in the 1980s. The network created such iconic programs as Crossfire and was must-see viewing for Americans interested in politics and news coverage.

Rode that thing all the way down. Nice.
needs new thinking,
Needs viewers.
Beck, and Dobbs gone, without a return to this kind of programming you can’t get back the viewers.
CNN was #1 when CNN was the only cable news channel. Now, with MSNBC, CNBC and HLN, they got noone watching. FNC is #1 now.
“Republicans, conservatives, independents and moderate Democrats who want fair and balanced news coverage are abandoning CNN in droves”
Why is this in the present tense? It’s well known that no sane right winger or conservative can stand that network. The only numbers that prop us CNN are accidental airline passengers at airport lounges and 24 hour gyms.
What CNN needs are a new conscience and a new constitution. A “new thinking” would be just a makeover.
CNN slogan:
“We Report....
...You Decide Not To Watch”
accidental airline passengers at airport lounges...”
I think this was a great idea CNN had - furnish the TV and make modifications so theirs was the only station that could be viewed. People waiting in the pre-board area are a captive audience. I have noticed that CNN also plays in the branches of my bank and even where I have my car serviced.
Wonder what would happen if someone took over management and ran it as a 100% conservative news channel. There really is none available now, particularly since FOX keeps moving left with their fair and balance baloney. Of course then there is the question of where they would ever find any conservative newscasters. Just a wild idea - how about someone like Sarah Palin?
It is well possible that when what is referred to as “new thinking” means that they need to become even more leftist and closer followers of their dear leader, Obama. Hope not, but that could very well be what they are thinking. Wouldn’t it be great, though, if they were thinking we need to become Conservative, because they do.
Conservatives are civil and read a magazine rather than watch CNN at the airport.
A democrat would throw something at the tube if Fox were on.

This all changed with Clinton. After the success of the Gulf War, and no real competition in sight, I guess the editors felt safe in letting their hair down with Clinton and showing their true colors.
I was a CNN fan in the eighties and it hurt to see the stark bias so blatantly displayed when the bent one came to power. For a while, I stopped watching the news, as I knew it couldn't be trusted. Kind of where I am now, after a decade with Fox.
Anyone want to start a new, fair news network?
At the hotair post on this I commented:
CNN needs to tack to the hard right, for ratings.
Scores of stations parrot the standard leftist lines, but Fox is almost alone in being center right like the American people. According to Gallup 42% of Americans classify themselves as conservative, while only 21% call themselves liberal. Why is the media the exact opposite (liberal)? It certainly is not based on economics. There is great room for conservative media. And the liberal side is crowded to the gills.
Later, I added:
I realize on afterthought thats not going happen, despite economics, until leftist econut Ted Turner expires.
Global warming will kill most of us, and turn the rest of us into cannibals. -Ted Turner
But global warming is trumped up bunk. Its two foundations were 1) the hockey stick graph that falsely maintained that the current temperatures are extraordinary (theyre not; theres nothing wrong with the climate), and 2) a posited causal correlation between CO2 & temps. See and share this video that succinctly and convincingly debunks the false ipcc claims on CO2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK_WyvfcJyg&desc=GGWarmingSwindle_CO2Lag
I haven't watched a network news show (or morning or any other time since then) in 40 years and I don't need to start now.
I get my news exclusively from the internet where I can weigh the most logical sequence of events from multiple news services.
The MSM thought that they had the market in information cornered and us sheeple just HAD to come to them to get our political indoctrination because they didn't have any choice in the matter.
Bad move. Glad they're suffering a slow and agonizing death and enjoying it continue into the future.
Putzheads!
Godspeed
Needs to consider telling the truth.
CNN owned the news for about a decade. By 2003/2004 timeframe....things kinda split off (MSNBC, Fox, etc). While CNN may pretend to be neutral....I’d say twenty hours of their general programming....leans to the left. If you ever go outside the country and watch CNN International...It’s as far to the left as you can go....with anti-US values.
If they wanted to change....I’d start off letting thirty percent of the CNN staff go, and steal off five or six Fox News folks. I’d also let that Piers guy go. I might actually have an hour in the day where I bring just regular people...from the heartland....a round-table of sorts led by some guy and just talk about regular things going on in the nation.
Or they can keep doing what they are doing, keep a low-business model in place, and just pay guys a lower wage.
Have no fear, the Commie News Netork, still doesn’t get it. They’ll still be part of the RATS propaganda network.
Four years after FOX came on the scene, they moved into the number one spot and have never been bested since then.
Has cnn ever really examined why or what they could change to re-take their former position in the ratings.
Never have, and I doubt that they will change in any significant fashion.
If anything, they may try to take the nbc, marxist position.
Im glad we quit “watching” news years ago. Reading it
is much better when you have all the choices with the internets.
