2. Anthem by Ayn Rand (far less Godless than Rand herself and a classic of intellectual liberty and individual freedom)
3. Suicide of the West by James Burnham
4. The Holy Bible
5. In Defense of Freedom by Frank Meyer
6. Modern Times by Paul Johnson
7. Stonewall Jackson by James I. Robertson
8. A Generation Awakes by Wayne Thorburn
9. The Anti-Capitalist Mentality by Ludwig von Mises
10. Protestant, Catholic and Jew by Will Herberg
I have a copy of “Stonewall Jackson” inscribed by the author to my son Thomas Jackson, for his first birthday.
Many books of general history would be useful: “John Adams,” of course, although I confess I haven’t made it through yet. (Time for the Book on CD approach.) “Paul Revere’s Ride,” by David Hackett Fischer, author of “Albion’s Seed.” Anything by G. K. Chesteron or nonfiction by C. S. Lewis.
Wow, that is quite a list, but then it is a long trip :)
Thanks!
I'm also glad that someone besides me likes Will Herberg's Protestant-Catholic-Jew: an Essay in American Religious Sociology (New York: Doubleday, 1956) and Ludwig von Mises' The Anti-Capitalistic Mentality (Princeton, NJ: Van Nostrand, 1956)
I picked up my copy at the Reagan Presidential Library and Museum last month. I was reading it during my wait at LAX and during the layover at Los Vegas, and I can't tell you how many people stopped and asked me where I'd gotten it and what I thought of it. I know it was at least 25-30.
