The mirror Is not broken, it is the reflection of those looking in to it that is broken. They break themselves in to African-American, Jewish-American, Hispanic-American, man, woman, Democrat, Republican, 99%-1%, gay, transgendered, pansexual, jock, nerd, etc.

Different metaphor than the one I was aiming at, but still interesting--e pluribus unum and all that.

Someone who knows Latin should work up the phrase "from one, many" and start using *that*.
