“Class of 1960” does indeed mean the class that would eventually graduate in 1960. A picture taken in 1950 of Miss Smith’s 2nd grade class could be titled “Class of 1960” and be correct.
However, if a picture is titled something like “1960 Grade 9” then that would mean the kids who were in 9th grade in 1960.

Actually, Seattle Public Schools funded every class under its jurisdiction to have a class photo in the spring between May 21 and Jun 6 every year. So a fifth grade class of 1952 at XYZ elementary would be the group that took 5th grade at XYZ elementary in the 51-52 school year.
Mercer Island was part of the Seattle Public School district until sometime in about the time frame we are talking about (1960) at which point Mercer Island became a separate district.
Bellevue was always a separate district in this period. Kids went to Mercer Island from feeder schools on the Island (there was only one in the early going); from feeder schools on the West side of Lake Washington in the Seward Park area North through Washington Park; and from feeder schools on the East side of the Lake in what was originally the Bellevue district--a kid who lived in the Bellevue district was not supposed to go to Mercer Island but that was enforced only against some running backs.
The Island School became the in thing--in part because of the extreme Liberal teachers at the school.
thanks, seems there are still freepers who confuse the word GRADE with CLASS OF. If Mercer opened to GRADE eight students in 1956 those students would have been there for GRADES nine, ten, eleven and twelve, to graduate CLASS OF 1960.

In the first one it clearly states she spent one year in Seattle and then TWO YEARS at the high school. That might have taken her to 1958.
