Labor Secretary Hilda Solis called the repeated reports of high unemployment and new jobless claims demoralizing, and asked that the media be more discreet.
Look, were fighting a war against the worst economic conditions this country has seen in 75 years, Solis said. Sure, there are going to be casualties in this war, but do the media have to harp on them every week? Dont they realize that theyre undermining our efforts to win this war?
Solis drew a parallel with how the medias handling of the rising body-counts undermined the countrys willingness to fight to win in Vietnam. Even though enemy casualties were ten times as high, the way that Walter Cronkite was telling it, it looked like we were losing, Solis remembered. That losing impression became a losing reality by sapping the publics confidence.
All were asking is that everyone get behind the President in this battle to revive our economy, Solis requested. A more balanced approach in reporting on unemployment would help. I mean, a person might lose his job, but lets not forget that he gains more leisure time. That means more time to spend with his family. More time to pursue his hobbies. Its not a tale of unending woe. There are offsetting gains.
The Labor Secretary suggested that stories showing unemployed moms coaching soccer teams, or unemployed dads enjoying fly-fishing would be a tonic to public morale. Building the publics morale is a job that the media are well-positioned to accomplish. I hope we can count on them to do it voluntarily.

I am speechless. Solis is actually asking the news reporters to lie more than they already do about the unemployment numbers? If they really told the truth about unemployment and underemployment, this country would be going after this Admin with tar and pitchforks. What scum we have in charge of our once great country!

This is so rich a target that it’s too easy . First, it reveals exactly what the Leftists hope to accomplish: no one should care about work, or being productive as such. The government will provide for everything - even decide when you should die (by being denied treatments). And moreover, if the brainless Hilda Solis genuinely believes in all this upside from unemployment - then why does she care how the numbers should be reported? Why should they be carefully reported to combat economic woes if there is so much benefit to being unemployed in her eyes? Why bother to mask or obfuscate the numbers at all? Why not just proudly scream them out as being high, proclaim you want them to spiral upward so that all the hobby-pursuing leisure time would increase exponentially? Of course, if your “hobby” depends on someone being employed to provide it to you - and they aren’t employed either because THEY are now “free” to pursue THEIR hobbies - well...why nitpick, right??
She just admitted that the Obama administration is losing. If this were a Republican it would be a non-stop 24 hour slamfest on the network news and in the papers.
The administration can’t find a single message that works for them. Zip. Nada.
The magic is gone and now they just look clueless. Pathetic.
Should anyone even wonder if the media is controlled by the democrats. The Threats to the media are being made behind the scenes. Do what we say or else.
Ten more at least, John.
The article is satire! Though I’m sure there’s some truth to it.
Obongo should abolish unemployment — let him assign an employment czar. That would be the sensible answer.
Wow...this satire fooled me more than usual. I could totally believe Solis said this.
I missed that....LOL. Not exactly unbelievable since I have seen things very similar to it in the past.
The best satire is heavily based upon the truth it is making fun of. This was definitely a good production.
Had me until I read that...then I knew it was you...LOL !!!
Solis begs....
“Please, please don’t tell the truth.”
FUHS
John, you almost got me.
“More leisure time” hehe.
We hope our maximum leader, obozo, gets lots more leisure time next year. (he’ll probbably claim unemployment)
How about the Labor Sec be terminated so she can benefit from more time with the family, more lesiure time etc
It took me 4 seconds to take note of the author.
Getting slow...
