I believe what he was saying, in other words, is that Mccain was denying the media a target to unify behind via villification.

The arrival of sarah Palin on the scene , an outspoken conservative, gave them a target once again, to evicerate and fillet in every major and minor media outlet.

Yes, I see the point of that, and I think it’s pretty accurate. Attacks on McCain were basically, “He’s old, and he might be bats.” Attacks on Sarah were much more personal.

However, there is the implication that this made the difference in the election, and I don’t think that’s correct at all.
