Kartographer, I beg to differ. We only need to look back as far as Hurricaine Katrina and the house-to-house searches that were done. The "authorities" conducted those searches looking for bodies/people in need/guns, but it could easily have been for supplies also.
We mustn't become fixated on a nationwide catastrophe. It will most likely be a regional one where National Guard or other assets can be mobilized in a few days time. Nelson- You might also want to prep for the eventuality you mentioned. You don't necessarily need a car to bug-out. Think bicycle, or backpack. ;)
Well...here is the issue: We are a family of 5. 3 kids...one of which is small. Our bug out location is about 30 miles away. Any other scenario we are OK....we have a heads up and can move our stuff. An EMP? If we do bug out...we lose the advantage of having stored up all our supplies.
And I doubt the National Guard will be coming. They have no plans for this at the State level...there would be communications...it would be chaos. Those guardsmen have families too...and they are going to protect them first.
