Years ago I read a novel in which men become extinct and society falls solely to women. One of the few male characters left in the world is a retired US Navy admiral. At the end of the novel, several women stand before a glass case, in which this guy -- now dead -- has been stuffed and mounted as an exotic specimen. The text is something along the lines: '(name), Vice-admiral, US Navy -- old style.' And the legend upon his glass case is, "It Served Us."
I have been trying to relocate a copy of this book but cannot remember the title. Google has failed. Help from fellow sci fi geeks would be appreciated.
PD James, The Last Man or something like that
Is that the one where a biochemist’s wife and daughter are killed by Irish Terrorists in London, and he sets out to kill all THEIR women and it gets away from him?
“P.D. James’s The Children of Men.”
I very much enjoyed that book. And although I’ve never seen the movie it is clear after reading the book and just seeing the ads for the movie that they twisted the story a good deal. Needlessly I’d say.

Yes, it is. But does it really get away from him, or is he pleased with the results?
Hubby gave me this book as it was always his fave. I wasn’t too thrilled with it, but I’d say the author gives a good portrayal of b*tchy Irish gals (I am one!).
I remember a book “No Blade of Grass” that was about some world-wide contagion. It might have had some men/women angle to it, but I really don’t remember the story at all anymore. I do remember I enjoyed reading it.

I saw the movie back in 1971. About a fungus that destroys grass and vegetation. Humans retreat into enclaves and fight each other to survive. Them men don’t all get killed.
yea, I kinda remember that book. Wasn’t the plague that killed the women on the back of postage stamps, that wouldn’t work today since we don’t lick them?
That was a virus that killed all the grasses in the world. Unfortunately, rice, wheat, oats, etc., are grasses. No male/female stuff.
Who wants a world without men?..... One of my ex-wives.
I consulted with the local Sci Fi Oracle and she has replied;
“The original was World Without Men by Eric Charles Maine published by Ace in the 1950s or early 60s. It was republishd with the title Alph by DelRay in 1973 or so.”
(My thanks to L. T. for the info!)
Is it The Children of Men, P. D. James?
