Convinced that unfettered freedom of speech is destroying our democracy, congressional Democrats are proposing that the First Amendment of the US Constitution be, itself, amended.
As it stands right now, the Constitution says that Congress shall make no law abridging freedom of speech, complained Representative Jim McGovern (D-Mass), co-sponsor of the proposed amendment. Well, we want to make a law, we need to make a law that puts clamps on unwarranted criticism of the government.
The proposed amendment is seen as necessary to protect the pending DISCLOSE Act from possibly being overturned by the Supreme Court. This Act would require that anyone criticizing the government be compelled to identify themselves. Too many people think they should be able to anonymously contradict, ridicule, or otherwise contest the official policies of the government, said amendment co-sponsor Representative Donna Edwards (D-Md). This type of cowardly attack on authority is not what our nations founders envisioned.
The proposed amendment would strike the total ban on Congressional suppression of free speech and replace it with a conditional one granting Congress the power to abridge speech when deemed necessary.

Although I appreciate your views, it’s bad manners to stump your own blog on another forum like Free Republic.
And who is to determine when criticism of the government is or is not “warranted”?
Every ‘rat is a control freak.
They are one or the other: they are either under control, or being the controller.
Anti-Soviet thought and speech was a crime in the old USSR, right?
Anti-Soviet/Government/Obama/Democrat Party thought/speech to be a crime too?
Great! Re-creating the USSR in the USSA!
TSA to be the new secret police to terrorize the citizens.
This is what we can expect if Obama is reelected. Our fundamental liberties will be taken away bit by bit, a Supreme Court will be filled with leftist idiots and Congress will seek new ways to tax and regulate every aspect of our lives. Obama will rule by decree without so much as a whimper in Congress and November 6, 2012 might well be our last free election. Thankfully our Founding Fathers left us the Second Amendment and I could easily see an armed rebellion against a totalitarian government.
I think some form of secession is a more viable option. It might have to come to arms, but secession could theoretically be peaceful. It could be like a big National Divorce.
I wonder what kind of drugs these assholes are on.
They really think they will be able to push and amendment of such a anti freedom agenda through both houses and then the states?
These suckers are on some real weird acid.
... ... unless a republican gets in the white house.
I figured you would not let that story get away...
.
libtards love censorship, one of the hallmarks of dictatorship
Representative Donna Edwards (D-Md). This type of cowardly attack on authority is not what our nations founders envisioned.
No, our founders envisioned people like you being tarred and feathered, and driven out of town with pitchforks.
These guys know nothing of history. I don’t think Poor Richard was the real name of the guy criticizing the crown.
What bunch of pansies.
“TSA to be the new secret police to terrorize the citizens.”
And the IRS. They are arming to enforce Obamacare.
