If *only* I was as well-prepared as my wife, who over a period of two years went from being insulin-dependent and significantly overweight to being insulin-free, almost at her ideal weight, and running competitively (she just got in from a two-mile run, in fact).

I believe you’re correct. My experience is that the American feminist movement has embittered a lot of good men who would normally feel it is their obligation to defend women from harm.
