Mas Ayoob is one of the country's foremost authorities on legal vs illegal shootings. He is probably the #1 legal expert on this topic, and is frequently called as an expert witness in trials of this nature.

Interesting info here on the pistol. The only round fired was the round in the chamber. The pistol did not chamber the 2nd round, perhaps because it was at such close range that the men were fighting over it, and it was out of battery after the first (and only) shot.

Ayoob:

My advice? Let’s all “stand our ground,” not participate in the rush to judgment, and wait for the facts and the evidence to become available to us 300 million jurors in the Court of Public Opinion.

Smart man. Smarter than Obama. Smarter than Santorum.

I hope this comes to trial so there can be a full investigation and public disclosure of the facts. The public deserves this. Both families deserve this. Zimmerman himself deserves either to formally acquitted of guilt, or convicted, as the facts may warrant.

There is a report that Zimmerman had actually quit following Martin and was returning to his vehicle when Martin advanced to him. This would be a game changer if true. The other thing not reported much is that while the media uses the most innocent looking pictures of Martin, they don’t report that he was 6’2” and much bigger than Zimmerman.

a 17 year old suspended from school for 5 days (!?) is not ‘squeaky clean

If any of my children were suspended from school for 5 days (!?) they would NOT be out walking around going to the store for skittles they would probvably be home still nursing a sore butt...

This article was posted earlier but has now been updated.

Update: Turns out that the Trayvon Martin Facebook page mentioned here last night was the wrong Trayvon Martin; that has been deleted with my apologies, and thanks to those who flagged me to the error. Also, HuffPost reports that Trayvon had been suspended for chronic truancy, but another source notes that his school’s posted rules do not prescribe that length of suspension for that minor an offense. Meanwhile, the college George Zimmerman had been attending has suspended HIM, due to the current controversy.

Lots of speculation here, without much data. The fact is that we don’t know what we don’t know about this case.

It sounds as though the Sanford police may have mishandled the investigation, but we don’t know.

About the only thing we seem to know for sure is that Treyvon was unarmed and Al Sharpton is doing what he does best - rabble rousing.

Frankly, I would like to see a full, complete and unbiased investigation so that ALL of the facts come out. Either way, both Zimmerman and Treyvon deserve their day in court.

But, all of this speculation isn’t it.

I heard the defendent’s lawyer speaking, via a phone somewhere, in an interview on BBC America this morning.

He was saying that at this time he does not see “Florida’s Stand Your Ground law” as an area he is going in his client’s defense, but rather “self defense” is.

Wheather or not the story from Backwoods Home Magazine is correct or not - concerning some things known about the gun - it would jibe with the direction - self defense - the defendent’s lawyer appears headed.

There was an earlier report that the magazine was still full, and that only the chambered round was fired. Presumably this detail was released by the police—only one bullet was fired.

Several people commented that maybe the reporter got the story wrong, since ordinarily a round from the magazine would have replaced the one that was fired in the chamber.

But, it now looks like that earlier report was correct, and that Mas Ayoob has given a likely explanation for it.

I will suggest a scenario. It may be true but of course there is no way to tell right now. I will say I have seen this exact same thing happen.

Zimmerman sees Martin acting suspiciously. They eye each other. Zimmerman makes some attempt to investigate then eventually loses sight of him and relaxes.

Eventually Zimmerman goes about his business. Suddenly from absolutely nowhere he is attacked from behind, knocked down and starts to take a vicious beating.

That is as far as the scenario goes.
