Washington (CNN) - Sen. Jim DeMint, the South Carolina Republican and tea party favorite, said Thursday he was 'excited' about the possibility of Mitt Romney becoming the GOP presidential nominee.

While not an outright endorsement, it is the closest the Republican kingmaker has come to making his preference known in the race for the White House.

"I can tell conservatives from my perspective is that, I'm not only comfortable with Romney, I'm excited about the possibility of him possibly being our nominee," DeMint said. "Again, this is not a formal endorsement and I do not intend to do that right now but I just think we just need to look at where we are."

DeMint's comments came the same day Romney met with influential Republicans on Capitol Hill, including House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan. Like DeMint, Ryan has not publicly backed a candidate in the GOP race, but is considered a prized endorsement for the White House hopefuls.

DeMint said Thursday he was "impressed" after his meeting with Romney.

"His leadership skills, the fact that he hasn't lived his life in Washington. There's a lot to like there," DeMint said.

The other candidates in the race – including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum – need to make an honest assessment of where the race currently stands, DeMint said.

"I don't have any immediate plans to do an endorsement but I think we all need to look at this presidential primary and encourage the candidates to do a little self-reflection here - what's good for our country," he said. "The sooner we can make a decision, I think the sooner we can focus on the real problem which is Obama."

DeMint said taking the race to the GOP convention in August would be a mistake...

As I've said for the past two years; we're outing all the RINO's in the effort to get the Establishment Elite's "Chosen One" that (R) Nomination. America doesn't want him; but The Party does.

We are in for The Messiah's Second Term, OR, in the alternative, ANOTHER LIBERAL THAT WILL CONTINUE THE SHREDDING OF THE CONSTITUTION, AND UN-DO NOTHING that's been Un-Constitutionally put in place in the last 4 years (Obamacare, Czars, Regulations, In-Justice Department/Amnesty, etc., etc.)

No relief in sight now for those who earn their own way responsiblly.

Dear Newt Gingrich:

Please apply your considerable intellectual faculties and organizational skills to design & build an American Conservative Party for we Reagan conservatives. Reagan’s GOP is long gone, and the Stupid Party that replaced it is brain dead.

Mr. Speaker, this would be a great service to the cause of conservatism.

Thank you.

We shouldn’t give up. We should shift our attention, energy and money to the Congress .... both the House and the Senate.

That’s our best hope for a firewall...not, sadly, the White House.

I don’t know why people are surprised. For all of DeMint’s supposed stellar bono fides, he’s done this before. Guy goes wobbly.

thought DeMint wouldn’t surrender to liberal used car salesman Romney

Have to be careful who we make our heros. Don't want to give away our power.

I really thought DeMint was better than that. I guess he is a party animal after all.

I think that's a bit harsh. We don't know what DeMint was thinking but it could be that he's desperate to stop O and thinks that's the best shot.

He's entitled to his opinion, I just don't happen to share that opinion.

Jim Demint, I should have known when you would not support Newt in South Carolina, you were poised to go down this road. When I called your office, to see if you would endorse Newt; they told me Jim was wanting to see how things went a long for Newt and how the RNC would receive him. This is our problem; all of these politicians put their jobs first and their loyally to the status quo.

I have family members who are elected representatives. Some, give their pay mostly to charity. They tell us they spend money in DC that the American people have no idea about. My son’s wife works at a congressional office. She says her pay increases come often. She tries to turn them down. they have to accept them. Government jobs do not make the economy grow though as many people think tho, they are spending like crazy. Our government is gone wild. Term limits are needed so, we can break this cycle.

We need a revolution. I am not accepting Romney. I heard today that Mitt was calming nerves after this big window to the man’s ideology of the etchy sketchy. Mitt has even mandate people working on his staff, along with global warming sympathizers and those who support gay rights. Romney has been exposed time and time again. We should not accept him because he is going to lose to Obama so we better protest now to get a better person.

If the public was not so dumb down and misinformed, and or a majority would put their country first, they would see that Newt, even with his flaws, can get ahold of Obama’s agenda and show the differences. We are at a war with the rhinos of the party and the radicals who have taken over our American systems. The insiders hate Newt for interfering with their set plans.

Maybe Newt and Palin can begin a new party if this all falls, because it is safe to say, that Romney will lose to Obama. People do NOT trust Mitt and that increases more every day. No matter, how they package him, he is Not a Conservative not even a republican. Mitt Romney is a liberal democrat.

Obama was groomed since 2004 to get where he is, now, the republicans are about to do the same thing. Try to put in a man, who has no core beliefs and as some of his friends say, Mitt does cave into pressure as he did in Massachusetts. The only good is to come, is that we hold our ground to let the republican party be cleaned out. It is our party, we have to do this- if we fail, we have to convince Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin to begin a new conservative party. How can we just go along-this is why we never get changes to our government. I am not supporting Romney. I want changes for my son and his little kids.

I want Speaker Gingrich in, Romney should step down. Someone, who has conservative clout, should begin a movement called, Romney, step out of the race.
