“Since my ears are on fire Image I’d like to clarify. It was more than DADT. It was Jim’s increasing “my way or the highway” tone that precipitated my throwing in the towel. If you didn’t toe the line to Jim’s vision of “conservative” -a vision that requires adherence to beliefs that have no real chance of ever again being embraced by a majority of American voters, then, in his eyes, you weren’t a “true” conservative and didn’t belong on Free Republic. As such, the place turned into an echo chamber of sycophants and boot-lickers where the only discourse permitted was what parroted the party line —whether or not these beliefs had any basis in reality. This shut down any meaningful discussion on certain issues while at the same time empowering a small group of truly vile bottom-feeders to appoint themselves Jim’s “enforcers”, baiting long-time Freepers into revealing they they disagreed with the political and cultural vitality of Jim’s vision of conservatism and then cheering when they got banned. When I had to tip-toe around what I posted out of fear of crossing the line and getting zotted, it was no longer fun to participate on Jim’s forum. And if it isn’t fun anymore, then why bother?

And then there are professional reasons. I’m now an E6 in the Navy. This means I’m going to find myself in positions of leadership where I will have to mentor and counsel junior sailors, some of whom might now be openly gay and others who have deep-seated personal and/or religious convictions against homosexuality. I need to be fair and respect the rights of both these groups of sailors and will have a difficult time doing so while avidly posting on a site that has increasingly embraced as the officially sanctioned viewpoint the anger and hatred once reserved for places like Stormfront. And I think this ugly, angry tone that FR has officially embraced saddens me the most.

I’ll miss posting over there but it stopped being fun a long time ago. The forum Jim wants will be the one he gets and if he has decided that the road to conservative victory lies in birtherism and gay-bashing, then it was time for me to part company.”
