A most excellent column. Thanks.
“The first and foremost purpose of government is to create government jobs.”
Uh..NO it is NOT!
You will not find THAT in the Constitution!
Government is to STAY OUT OF THE WAY, but provide a “safe” environment for commerce.
Beautiful!
Fiction has become part of our everyday lives!
Utterly beautiful; it’s the truest thing I’ve ever read about the demise of the U.S. I particularly love:
“The beauty of the machine is still embedded in the fascist undercoating of progressive government”
And we all know who the idiot cousins are these days. The wonderful thing for the Fascist Dems is that they get to reward the idiots with jobs in their godless gov’t while at the same time maintaining and englarging the plantation of idiot cousins that are their voting block. The Gov’t cousins adminster the HUD housing, welfare payments and food stamps all the while their cousins collect the benefits, live in Gov’t housing, and shop at Wallymart with gov’t chit. Their offspring are baby sat at Gov’t schools where the cousins are employed as “teachers” and wardens.
They completely control the city in which I live and to such an extent that no one even bothers to vote in city elections; elections are so easily stolen its completely pointless. So everyone who isn’t one of the “cousins tribe” left a long, long, time ago.
Now of course, the cousins are heralded in history with their own history month and are triumphed with gaudy monuments to their heros as the rest of us toil pointlessly in the land operated by and for the 15%. They dominate popular culture with their gangsta beat and bling and drug society.
Never before in the history of human kind has a nation been destroyed from within in such a short period of time by a virulent, minority sub-culture that amounted to only 15% of the population. Its so amazing to watch its almost awesome.
We have been throwing idiot cousins are the war on poverty, at discrimination and at overeating. And now we're poorer, more bigoted and fatter than we used to be. Given another generation we'll have trouble getting up out of bed at the homeless shelter long enough to carry out hate crimes.
Loved that. Almost Steynian.
“Progressives” have for generations said we must give more power to government because society is more complex than it was at the Founding, which of course it is.
What they never seem to realize is that because society is more complex top-down control is less effective.
1 baron can oversee 30 knights (thugs) as they force 500 serfs to plant and harvest crops. It works, sort of. Inefficiently, of course.
As society and economies become more and more complex it becomes proportionately less possible for the men at the top to gather the needed information and make wise decisions to control society.
I suspect the last time it was sort of possible to run a command and control economy, albeit in a wildly inefficient and incredibly brutal way, was in 1930s USSR. Stalin’s Five Year Plans did accomplish a lot in a material way, jump-starting a heavy industry that allowed them to outlast the Nazis in the next decade.
But there is no way it is possible to run a modern economy in the same way. Whether we think it would be more compassionate to do so or not, it just isn’t possible.
The timing of this column is right on the money with something I was thinking. As I was searching for a dinner place Saturday night around Raleigh I noticed that all were slammed with long waits -and yet the folks were not familiar to me. And by familiar, I don’t mean folks I know, I mean the typical Raleigh folks at middle upper end restaurants.
Then it dawned on me: we’ve been invaded by a government class that suddenly now has all the jobs and even though the jobs are mostly “idiot cousin” jobs, those jobs now have more pay and more security than the private sector.
That’s who packed the restaurants - not the normal collection of business owners and Doctors and so on - no - over paid government bureaucrats. The idiot cousins indeed. They were everywhere.
My wife thinks I’m crazy sometimes, but I can sense these sea change things going on and I think the author of this piece nailed it.
Progressives believe that government is the means by which humanity can be perfected, when in reality, and specifically due to human fallibility, the government they create to do such a thing is like a physician who treats a multitude of symptoms while ignoring the source of the underlying malady. So after a century or so of progressive government, what we've ended up with is a collection of institutions designed to mitigate the annoying elements of humanity. Yet, when considered as a whole, these institutions do far more to harm the human spirit than perfect it.
