Apathy will be the legacy of Romney’s carpet bombing
Legal Insurrection ^ | 2/1/12 | William Jacobson

Mitt Romney had a strong win last night in Florida. There’s no way to spin it otherwise, just as there was no way to spin Newt’s South Carolina win otherwise.

But at what cost?

Financially the cost was about $17 million for Romney and his SuperPAC, almost entirely on negative ads. Of the $15 million in negative ads run by or for Romney, only one was positive, a radio ad in Spanish run only 15 times.

Last night, Brit Hume described the win appropriately: “He beat Newt Gingrich by bombing him back into the stone age” with negative ads.

Despite Romney’s apparently straight-faced yet completely false assertions that he tried to run a positive campaign and only went negative because Newt outspent him in South Carolina, Romney showed himself to be devoid of the ability to inspire the conservative base. Tellingly, turnout in Florida was down significantly from 2008; by contrast, in South Carolina turnout was up significantly.
**snip**
Unless something changes soon, apathy will be the legacy of Romney’s carpet bombing.

Romney's scorched earth tactics are ruining the race. He has no positives to run on, much like Obama. If he wins the nomination, I'm sure we're all just waiting breathlessly for the ten thousand negative ads we will hear.

Sickening, just sickening......

That’s politics FRiend. Money talks..... I don’t like it either. However, given the money difference and demographics of Florida it was not surprising. Romney has been running for President there for 5 years and his organization was hard to beat.

One reason for encouragement was adding the numbers for Santorum and Gingrich together. They were outspent by an incredible amount and still got almost the same vote.

If Santorum stays in, his right if he chooses, we will get Mittens. If Santorum drops out there there is a good chance that Gingrich gets the nod. That is the way I see it....

You know we have gone astray as a party when even Michael Reagan had to come out and tell our presumptive nominee and his political and conservative media supporters to stop lying about the Reagan revolution and Newt’s role in it.

We have in Romney someone who was willing to carpet bomb the history of the Reagan revolution and the conservative insurgency of the 1990s, movements he stood against when he ran for office in 1994 and 2002.

The rift between GOP-E and GOP-Tea has transitioned to civil war. Newt's win in SC made the RINOs come out and say they would sandbag Newt if he beat Mitt in FL. Normally, they would sit back, wait for the RINO to pull ahead and then demand that GOP-Tea support the RINO winner. Their true natures, long suspected by GOP-Tea, were revealed by their actions. Party unity only applies when the RINO wins.

Any scorched earth is theirs and theirs alone.

""In counties where Gingrich did better, Republican turnout was up over 2008.""

Our people tried their level best!

"In counties where Romney dominated, turnout was lower."

NO enthusiasm for Romney.

Sickening!

I spoke to people here in Florida that said the negative ads had a lot to do with how they voted.

We need a candidate to speak for the conservative voice or find another party. Newt is going to have to keep going because he is our only voice for conservatism. I don't think Rick can get those numbers.

So the Spanish ad was negative AND positive?

Romney will not go negative on Obama, count on it. Meanwhile, Obama and his superpacs will flood us with negative ads on Romney and Bain Capital every day. And, our Congressional candidates will be tied to Romney, again with a deluge of negative ads. The RNC, led by Romney, will tell the Congressional candidates to not go negative to counter.

Another problem I see with Mitt is that if he somehow manages to capture the nomination he will never run the same scorched earth campaign agains’t Obama. He will not want to take the heat from the media so he will do the same thing McCain did and lose. Newt will take it to Barry bigtime and never backdown. IMO Newt Gingrich is the only candidate who can beat Obama in Nov.

Spending 6:1 on negative ads full of lies, is a despicable record. It's something I'd expect from the DNC/Bamster, but Milt has taken this strategy on full speed.

Any conservative who justifies this behavior IS NOT A CONSERVATIVE!

$17M...comes to about $20/vote, doesn’t it? More, when you think there are Floridians who’d have voted for him if he’d never done any ads at all.
