Is Rick Perry the Iowa Dark Horse?
The Atlantic ^ | December 31, 2011 | Molly Ball

....... Perry is still the affable governor of Texas, and voters still want to like him, which has become easier since he's mostly stopped screwing up all the time...

...He tells the crowd that the small towns of Iowa are just like the small towns of Texas, where he grew up: "The same people, the same values."

As the days to the caucuses wane, Perry has things other candidates would kill for: Crowds who want to meet him, ads all over the airwaves, a decent ground organization, an anti-Washington message people are hungry for, and terrific hair. The question is whether it's too little, too late, to get through the crowded pack ahead of him.

Several Perry-inclined voters in Boone said they were former Herman Cain supporters, which helps explain Perry's uptick.

Marti Melton-Streeter, the former GOP chairwoman in Boone County, said she couldn't support Romney because of his health-care record, and she's frightened by Ron Paul's foreign policy views. Perry, she recently decided, deserves a second chance with voters.

"I'd really like to see Rick Perry come out of Iowa. I think he needs that opportunity on the national level," she said. "I know there have been missteps along the way, but his philosophy is what we need in a candidate."

Carolyn Erickson, an 81-year-old from Ogden, thought she'd made up her mind to support Romney, but Perry changed her mind.

"I was what you call impressed" with Romney when she saw him Thursday, she said. "Today, I'm excited. I feel a passion for [Perry]."

But at least one audience member experienced a different conversion. Loren Nalean, 61, a Boone attorney, said Perry convinced him to caucus -- for Romney.

"I just think he's more intelligent and more sophisticated than Governor Perry," he said.

>> The Newt-mania made me think that maybe Perry wasn't all that bad. If Newt is our last hope we are surely screwed. <<

Heh. At the height of Perrybot frenzy on FR when their candidate started to unravel, the Perrybots truly flew into hysterics that made Ron Paul's cult seem rational. I remember on one thread there was a Perrybot who claimed Cain "may be even worse than Obama for the economy" and was emulating Obama by running as a "conservative black man" -- and on the same thread another Perrybot started ranting that "anti-immigration bigots" are engaged in a conspiracy to destroy Perry. I can't tell you how many times Perry supporters accused everyone who criticized him of hating Texans, Christians, states rights, the constitution, southern white men, etc., etc. Worse than even the most obnoxious Newticles.

On the other hand, if you compare the CANDIDATES themselves, Newt is clearly worse than Perry, IMO. Perry is just some clueless political lightweight who lucked into being Governor of Texas forever because the state is safe Republican and his "opponents" for Governor are jokes. He'll say anything to get votes and is just content to stay in office forever, maintain the status quo, and leach off taxpayers. But Newt is a truly underhanded and deceptive slimeball who has skeletons in his closet a mile long and enjoys playing footsie with liberal scumbags in his spare time while selling himself as an anti-establishment tea party hero to gullible conservatives. He reminds me of the worst aspects of 1970s era Nixon government combined with a Clintonesque "personal life". Ugh. I truly believe that if he is the nominee, it guarantees another Obama term. The Democrats are chomping at the bit to run against this guy.

Then don't let him come in 5th or worse Tuesday.

I found it amusing that that this incompetent, self-centered hick actually had presidential ambitions. Stay in Texas, La Raza Rick.

Such a long post to convince others that Gov. Rick Perry is a “loser.” Perry — the long running governor of the 13th largest economy in the world with a population of 25,000,000 — who pulled in $17,000,000 for his election in 40 days — working under the constraints of recent back fusion surgery.

All 50 states should have such “losers.”

Did you know that Gov. Perry relinquished his post as head of the Republican Gov. Association to run (he was serving his 2nd stint in that office)? The states and their newly elected conservatives are the strongest glue holding this country together at the moment.

They’ve run some big names (backed with big money and organization and lock-step media help) against Perry and he is still in office.

Happy New Year.

Your posting #60 is fantastic, TM7!!!

That’s the first time I’ve seen the rationale for the TTC expressed so succinctly! ....Too many folks were too nearsighted when disagreeing with Perry on the TTC.

Related... Recent news has been showing how the delays or constraints on the port of Charlotte NC regarding their need to deepen their port will preclude the much larger ships and the containers they carry from gaining access there, after the completion of the Panama Canal expansion.

Texas ports and inland transportation means should be updated as well.

At this point it is difficult to predict who will and won't do good running against Obama later this year but everyone likes to claim their candidate is the one that will do the best.
In Newt's case he clearly has weaknesses that are being exploited now and will be again later. Remember that his own members (caucus) insisted that he resign as Speaker in 1998. Since leaving office (his conservative Georgia district voters ) he has taken many progressive positions that he thought at the time would be good for him.
He claims he can beat Obama (solely) with his great debating skills yet he is complaining about unfair ads against him as being the source of his return to the lower position in the Iowa polls. There will only be two debates against Obama (at most) and Obama has been banking hundreds of millions of $$$ to use against the nominee.

After/if Newt loses the Iowa race he will go negative against fellow Republicans and his ‘don't be critical of fellow Republicans’ rule will just be talked away like everything else he has done in the past that doesn't work for him now.

Right on! Perry only has three minor obstacles, the heartless comment, brain freeze, and immigration.

1) The heartless crap is just stupid.

2) The brain freeze only human, especially right after major surgery and general anesthesia.

3) And the immigration issue is bogus. I just saw Perry say he could secure the border within a year after his inaugeration and he is totally against amnesty.

The other candidates all have more baggage and, unlike Perry, it’s real problems. Except Santorum. Perry’s my first choice, Santorum’s my second.

So true. As I’ve said many times before, if Perry were truly the ‘ true conservative ‘ in the race, why did he plummet to the bottom and never recover? Why is he not beating Romney, let alone Paul?

most of us know why.

"Really annoy the RNC. Vote for Perry. He wants to cut their hours and paychecks."

I was born at night, but not last night.

The Constitution grants no such powers to the Executive Branch over the Legislative Branch to the Executive Branch.

As if Congress, any Congress, Republican or Democrat would vote to relinquish their power, perks and pay.

No, we don't want the president to have the power to just arbitrarily be able to make congress part-time. BUT - there are things called mandates - when the people elect a person to represent them - and they, and the candidate make it clear what they are being elected to do - THEN - that elected leader can represent the PEOPLE, those who both send them there to do the job - AND - send them the tax dollars that pay their salaries.

Perry is to be credited for having the necessaries to bring this to the front. It's a great idea, one that will never be implemented by the insiders in DC. It's going to take an outsider to get this thing going.

What a silly thing for you to dump him over. Why didn't you dump him when he said he is in favor of cutting taxes, cutting regulations, pro 2nd amendment, anti abortion, pro marriage, pro family, pro drilling for oil and gas and in favor of border protection by our fed government? Maybe you don't like those other things he said either!

Everyone knows why. Only a handful of Perry fangirls refuse to admit it.

Perry's 2012 presidential campaign will be remembered as one of the biggest jokes in modern history.
