When Fox News and Glenn Beck broke up in June, the networks chairman, Roger Ailes, knew he could not put any single man or woman in that 5 p.m. time slot, lest he or she be compared to Mr. Beck or be pummeled in the press if the ratings tumbled.
So, about a week and a half before Mr. Beck signed off, Mr. Ailes wrote the words The Five on a piece of paper. Looking to the ABC talk show The View and to the time of day as inspiration, he pictured five co-hosts who could argue about the days top stories without feeling antipathy for one another. When announced on June 30, Mr. Becks last day, The Five seemed to be a temporary fix even to the co-hosts, who were initially told they were just trying out for a weekend show.
But the show has stuck and has become a permanent part of the networks lineup. The shows ratings, though generally not as high as Mr. Becks, are growing. And most important, the advertisers that had shunned Mr. Beck are coming back to the time slot....

The five sucks.
Sorry it has apparently caught on.
I can’t stand the show and never watch it.
Red Eye is much better, although it has it’s off days.
I haven’t intentionally watched a FOX program since Beck left. I might stop on a story as I’m channel surfing but that’s it.
Greg Gutfeld is funny/witty, and even more so on his Red Eye show, hard to catch at 3 am.
That’s why Silicon Valley invented the DVR.
He’s funny.
I remember in describing Paul during the last debate, he said,’Paul was just himself. He manages to say something reasonable but follows it with something goofy. It’s like ordering steak topped by necco waffers.’ LOL
Yes, but I’ve stopped watching Red Eye, too. I’m fed up with Faux.
Minuses: Bob Beckel is simply a toad. Nasty and ungracious and a liar. Dana Perrino is wishy-washy.
Pluses. Greg Gutfeld always makes me laugh. Kimberly Guilfoyle, hubba hubba, and she’s fearless and unapologetic.
I like it more than Red Eye these days. I can’t take the painfully unfunny “Bill Schultz punks people” segments that take up too much of the show. And, my favorites S.E. Cupp and Imogen Lloyd-Webber have lately disappeared.
Hadn’t really thought about it much; it wasn’t on purpose but I kind of lost interest in the network and haven’t been watching since.
Bill is the token Democrat on that show (as well as one of the three writers, IIRC) so that’s understandable.
“The Five” get a “2” on the ten scale in my view...
Interesting article regarding cable news and advertisers as well as why Fox and Beck broke up. Looks like truth isn’t big when it comes to profit and ad sales.
Fox News is, first and foremost, a business.
Whichever of the women on the show is showing the most leg gets to sit next to Bechtel. That would be a permanent seat for Dhue - where’d she go BTW.
SC Cupp and Lloyd Webber are with Glenn on GBTV. I love Glenn’s
new show however sometimes 2 hours is just to long.
The Five is stupid because it turns news in to entertainment. Beckel is a boor and Gutfeld should just stick to RedEye.
Laurie Dhue wrote a book about her alcoholism and she’s out of the news business, working for her own charity, which IIRC, helps other women afflicted with alcoholism.
RedEye constantly pushes the gay agenda. I’ve stopped watching that. About all I ever watch on FNC is Special Report with Bret Baier.
