In Beck’s Shadow, Rise of ‘The Five’
The New York Times ^ | December 25, 2011 | Brian Stelter

Posted on 12/27/2011 10:02:33 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

When Fox News and Glenn Beck broke up in June, the network’s chairman, Roger Ailes, knew he could not put any single man or woman in that 5 p.m. time slot, lest he or she be compared to Mr. Beck or be pummeled in the press if the ratings tumbled.

So, about a week and a half before Mr. Beck signed off, Mr. Ailes wrote the words “The Five” on a piece of paper. Looking to the ABC talk show “The View” and to the time of day as inspiration, he pictured five co-hosts who could argue about the day’s top stories without feeling antipathy for one another. When announced on June 30, Mr. Beck’s last day, “The Five” seemed to be a temporary fix — even to the co-hosts, who were initially told they were just trying out for a weekend show.

But the show has stuck and has become a permanent part of the network’s lineup. The show’s ratings, though generally not as high as Mr. Beck’s, are growing. And most important, the advertisers that had shunned Mr. Beck are coming back to the time slot....

Like Greg Gutfeld, but The Five is absolutely awful.

Fox News has mostly become unwatchable. There’s very little news on Fox News these days. It’s a lot cheaper if a so-called news channel doesn’t have to pay for reporters and assets to cover news in the field.

Every Fox show simply repeats the same silly stories all day long that some one thinks will attract ratings.

Only reason to watch The Five is to see Andrea.

I agree. The show "THE FIVE" is a total waste of time.
Bob Beckel is such a prune.
No! I won't put up with that garbage, no matter how much, they make a laughing stock out of Beckel.

It’s like Fox’s version of “The View.”

The Five doesn’t cut it—I am sure they could come up with something better. Put up another show—maybe something with some bite to it and not pablum. Something like Joe Pine—something edgy without the Beck Preaching. Savage?

I used to watch it for Kimberly, hot hot hot. However Beckel and his substitute, Juan Williams are so annoying, even for liberals, that it became too much to watch.

The single worst show Fox has ever put on. We can’t stand it. We wait for Brett Baier at 6PM

Precisely the reason I quit watching RedEye. That is, when I’m still awake at that hour.
Happy New Year Chief!

LOLOLOL. You’re right about Beckel. It was hard enough to endure him once a week on Hannity’s panel. Now, I won’t watch him on Hannity’s either. Enough!

At 5 I switch to Fox Business Channel and watch the “Willis report” with Gerri Willis. If you don’t get FBC demand it!

Of the seven rotating hosts, the five regulars are Greg Gutfeld, who also helms the overnight show “Red Eye”; Eric Bolling, who also has a show on the Fox Business Network; the former Bush administration spokeswoman Dana Perino; the conservative columnist Andrea Tantaros; and the Mondale campaign manager and Fox analyst Bob Beckel.

Two others, Juan Williams and Kimberly Guilfoyle, sometimes sub in.

factually untrue...... true for juan not for kimberly. ... kim appears just as often as andrea. .... they are both regulars and drop dead gorgeous conservative babes .... and always sit in the leg chair...... rarely do they appear together....this photo is the exception.

A Greg Gutfield show, like Redeye, would be preferable to The Five. Bob Beckel is just too much to take. As melodramatic as Beck used to get, he was still usually very entertaining and educational.

permanent seat for Dhue - where’d she go BTW.

Alcohol rehab. Caught her on Redeye a couple of years ago where she was relentlessly mocking pro-lifers. Lost all respect for her that night. After that she was always ugly to me. Maybe she was drunk.

Sad about the alcoholism. That’s a bad problem to have. I guess she must have been the life of a few too many parties.

I find the show more interesting than the guy hollering “Cloward-Piven!!” every day, trying to stampede the viewers. Beck is like the TV version of Ron Paul.
