Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner is apologizing for comments he made about Michelle Obama that were overheard in an airport Wednesday, when the Wisconsin Republican was reportedly heard complaining that "she lectures us on eating right while she has a large posterior herself."
Fishbowl DC reported yesterday that an unnamed Democratic operative had heard a "very loud" Sensenbrenner, pictured at left, make the comments while talking on the phone in the Delta Crown lounge at Reagan National Airport. The source claimed the Congressmen was relaying a story about his response to a woman who had praised the first lady at a church auction three weeks earlier.
According to the Journal-Sentinel, church members heard Sensenbrenner mocking the first lady's "big butt" at that event on December 10.
Michelle Obama has worked to fight childhood obesity through healthy eating and "let's move" initiatives. According to the Fishbowl DC report, Sensenbrenner suggested on the phone Wednesday that the first lady needs to learn to follow her own advice.
Sensenbrenner spokesperson Amanda Infield told Fishbowl on Thursday that the lawmaker would apologize.
"Mr. Sensenbrenner was referring to the First Lady's healthy food initiative," she said. "He doesn't think the government should be telling Americans what to eat. While he may not agree with all of her initiatives, he plans to contact the First Lady's office to apologize for his comments."
Sensenbrenner, meanwhile, released a statement that he had already sent a note to Mrs. Obama.
"I regret my inappropriate comment and I have sent a personal note to the First Lady apologizing," he said, according to the Journal-Sentinel.

This thing with the Congressman making reference to The First Lady's big butt and then offering an apology is woefully asymmetrical with what ails our society, to diametric, polar opposite extremes.
The fact is, Congressman Sensenbrenner said it as it is, he spoke the truth, in the same manner most American, God knows most FReepers, would have said it themselves. What the Congressman did was no different than when Rep. Joe Wilson called the President a liar. Both the congressman and the representative said the truth and had every right to say it without the need of an apology.
The difference with Rep. Wilson is that he chose to express himself in manner disrespectful to the office of the Presidency and for that his apology was warranted, but Mrs. Obama deserving nothing of the sort for either the comments made against her, nor for any special First Lady privilege.
What is really out of kilter regarding the Congressman's apology is not so much the civility, refined manners he demonstrated by calling the First Lady, it's that with all that has gone so very wrong throughout every aspect of the American experience, the mortgage meltdown, the Wall Street/Banking financial fiascos, the huge budget over-runs, Government bail-outs, the Obamas' heinously extravagant life-style, itinerary the world over, Nancy Pelosi and her dirty money-making legislation, MFS Global money gone missing, the country being picked over and for all intense and purposes bankrupt, every body for themsleves, ad nauseum ad infintum, I am very sorry, ashamed to say, I took notice of not one apology ,not a single one by any of the entire lot of stinking politicians, crooks for any single damn thing. And you're never going to get one either.

Sensenbrenner was right. She does have a big butt AND she does make it her business to tell us how to eat, and we HATE it. They called President Bush so much worse, but waved the flag of ‘free speech.’ Sensenbrenner is a gentleman that he would apologize. And she CAN butt out of our eating habits — she’s such a hypocrite.
I think he said that he’d like to “tap” that posterior.
Maybe he’s a rapper that likes big butts.

Apologizing won’t reduce the size of her enormous ass. There’s truth in jest. Instead of apologizing, why not say “it was inappropriate for me to speak behind one’s back, but until she’s personally fit, lay off the rest of us you hypocrite”.
I don’t blame him. You knock into that posterior and you gonna get hurt.
Well I wouldn’t want to knock that posterior either. The wave action alone may cause another earthquake.
