I agree with those here that say that knowledge is the best barter item. Anyone got any suggestions for how-to books to have in your home library for SHTF scenario? I'm talking about the kind of books that tell you how to do MacGuiver-type stuff with what's available.

I think the shelf life is a couple years. Emergencies often make shelf life irrelevant, if it’s truly life or death.

As for medical issues, I’d look online, I anm not a doctor.

Here is a longshot skill: make injectable insulin starting with an animal pancreas. I looked it up, did a little research, and the way they used to extract it and prove it was OK is 19th century technology and within reach of actually doing on your own.

Somewhat intensive in time and resources, but with fire, clean water, and lab glassware do-able. Oh and you need to raise mice for the assays.

If your postapocalyptic setup includes a slaughterhouse, insulin could be a sideline.

Mountain men over 50 won't need 14, 20, 26, 41, 44, 61 or 81.

Gotta disagree. This is a list of barter items. Not a list of essentials for after the SHTF.

All the items on the list have value to someone. And a Mountain Man might meet up with one or more in need of those items.

Besides...condoms are good for so many other things besides their primary function.

I can make good quality hooch (including forced oak aging). I got trade sewn up around these parts, should stuff hit the fan. Don't need that other stuff, and I dang sure don't want to trade with someone needing diapers. I'm allergic to small children. ;)

What skill do you want to read about? Look on Google Books for it. Everything before 1920 is no longer copyrighted, and the books are free. Either print them out, or store on an e-book reader and keep the reader in a faraday bag in case of EMP event (I use Tech-Protect's faraday bags, good price, great construction, meets MIL-B-81705-Rev-C)

I have hundreds of free books on my e-reader, and add about 10 a week.

Oh, btw, the late 1800s/early 1900s tech level is pretty doable. Less call for weird chemicals/materials/tools. And it's a respectable tech level. Life could be comfortable with that tech level.

I lived for about a year at a mid 1700s tech level, and it sucks. Out loud.

A great source of penicillin is actually aquarium supply stores. I can’t remember the exact name, but it is pretty close to clinical doses and safe.

I hear ya. I'm just glad mine are on "the home stretch" in college and know how to handle a pistol and long gun if/when they need to stand a watch.

I have a nice mil spec med kit for SHTF...and I've been able to get syringes and small'ish gauge needles at my farm supply store but have been lacking the anti Bs. Didn't know what or where to get. Now I know what and where. Thanks!
