Romney Proposes National ID Card (Police State Alert)
The New American ^ | 2011-12-19 | Joe Wolverton

Mitt Romney has a plan. A plan to solve the “immigration problem.” And it will come as no surprise to those following the GOP presidential debates that the answer of Romney — the former Governor of Massachusetts and father of the “individual mandate” — is more government.

At last week’s debate, Romney announced his idea for dealing with the more than 11 million illegal immigrants currently living in the United States in defiance of applicable federal and state laws.

On stage in Sioux City, Romney laid out for Republicans his plan for a national identification card system to distinguish between those here without permission and those legally permitted to live and work in the United States.

There is a fatal flaw in Mitt’s plan: The Feds say we cannot ask anyone to produce papers proving they are in this country legally. Just ask Joe Arpaio!!

The sad thing is the media will give him a pass again and again because he’s best alternative to Obama for them; but if he gets nominated they’ll crush him just like McCain. If they were afraid of him...really, the media would be out there crucifying him...but of coarse they’re unsure now, which is a nice thing for once.

If Newt proposed a National ID card, some freepers would be lining up to get theirs. :-)

For the same reason the joke goes “If you cannot hear me, raise your hand”.

If you could make illegals get ID cards, you could make them leave and you wouldn’t need ID cards.

Romney is no ideal conservative.

There, I fixed it for you. You are welcome.

What's the big beef? Why shouldn't they be required to do the same thing we all must to to have lawful and gainful employment.

The beef is simple. The existing laws make it illegal for non-citizens to remain in the USA and/or work without an appropriate visa. They also require employers to request ID from potential employees to prove they are entitled to work. But as we all know somehow those laws get ignored, or weakened so that they are useless. For example, an employer has to ask for ID, but really can't question the veracity of it in any practical way. And the government does next to nothing to enforce immigration laws.

Romney's solution - make the rest of us who are here legally get new ID, even though we already have ID which we had to prove our citizenship to get. Then the government can keep doing what it always does - ignore illegal immigration. Law abiding citizens will bear the burden and hassle of the new federal ID, and it won't do anything to stop illegal immigration since the government doesn't bother to enforce the law.

Romney’s a idiot. Besides, we already have a National ID card. It’s called a Driver’s License.

No, that’s not what he’s asking if I’m reading it correctly.

Show me where he is saying that. He specifically said ID cards for immigrants.

The rest of us already have ID cards.

The ID cards proposed are for immigrants to prove they are here legally.

Legal immigrants already have those cards - they are called "Green Cards" and immigrants are required to carry them at all times.

I am unsure what other ID they might need, considering that the GC meets, if not exceeds, the requirements spelled out in the Real ID act - it has a photo, a fingerprint, seals, machine-readable text, a magnetic strip, and it's all laminated. It's probably the most secure document that the government issues, outside of DoD's toys like the Common Access Card.

Actually, it’s not Green cards, it’s much more basic than that. Romney proposed an expansion of the E-Verify program, which requires employers to investigate the immigration status of potential workers.

“In October at a town hall meeting in Sioux City, Iowa, Romney addressed the role he envisions the federal government playing in preventing businesses from hiring those without proper work visas.

You’ve got to crack down on employers that hire people that are illegal, and that means you have to have a system that identifies who’s here legally, with a biometric card that has: this is the person, they’re allowed to work here. You say to an employer, you look at that card, you swipe it in your computer, you type in the number, it instantly tells you whether they’re legal or not.”

It’s enforcing e-verify.

Let’s not e-vilify. At least he’s not granting in state tuition and pushing amnesty like Perry.

I still cant hear the wonderful solutions that the FR people have come up with to solve the problem of illegals . How do THEY propose to locate the millions who are already here?

In New Mexico we are still trying to get voters to be required to show their id when voting
guess what party is dead set against it...and I dont think they are worried about the Constitution either, They just want every illegal vote to count

Last September many read an article in Wired Magazine that described India's ambitious program to create special ID cards for their billion people. The program is headed by entrepreneaur Nandan Nilekani. These cards will have biometric information derived from fingerprints and iris scans. Such was implimented to help in the delivery of vital social services to the poorest in society who often lack – or are at least told they lack – sufficient identification papers. The government has long complained that most of the money set aside for the neediest is diverted as a result of corruption, and it believes the cards could help to tackle identity theft and fraud.

The latest is this program is dead. It is extremely expensive. The Indian government has learned that there are insufficient safeguards to insure that illegal residents are kept from getting such cards and tapping into the social services at the expense of legal citizens.

The case against national ID cards is close, Willard. Let's pick another topic. Do you want to buy a vowel?

It’s enforcing e-verify.

And should be with a vengeance.
