The recent National Review editorial savaging Newt Gingrich and urging that all candidates other than Mitt Romney, Jon Huntsman and Rick Santorum be removed from consideration set off a firestorm in the conservative movement. I tend not to be an establishment vs. the baseperson (for want of better terms) but this primary season has ratcheted up the tension between the groups however you define them.
What bothers me about National Reviews stance and others like Jennifer Rubin, George Will and Ann Coulter is the degree to which just about every charge they lay against Gingrich, save a stable family life, could just as easily be made about their chosen candidate, Mitt Romney.
Newts a flip-flopper? Mitt? Hes had a few of his own.
Newt has advanced the occasional idea that doesnt square with traditional conservatism. Romney designed the prototype for ObamaCare.
Newt partnered with Nancy Pelosi. Mitt sends out John Sununu (the man who vouched for David Souters conservatism) to attack Newt for opposing the George H.W. Bushs tax increase (which broke his Read my lips pledge).

Dems and the big money calling the shots would prefer Romney over Gingrich because he is pliable and beatable.
Hate to admit, but I think lots of women are gonna fall for Willard.
Not this woman. He is just creepy.
“Why Do Some Give Mitt Romney The Benefit Of So Many Doubts?”
The same thing can be said about Newt Gingrich. Both men are big government progressives - the opposite sides of the same coin.
...because he’s good looking and charming. The ONLY reason, IMO.
Only women who like robots.
And please remember it’s Democratic women who have teenage crushes on their politicians.
I only get a crush on tax cuts.
“What bothers me about National Reviews stance and others like Jennifer Rubin, George Will and Ann Coulter is the degree to which just about every charge they lay against Gingrich, save a stable family life, could just as easily be made about their chosen candidate, Mitt Romney.”
All this is irrelevant. Those attacking Gingrich know Romney won’t shake anything up. Nothing basic will change. That’s the real goal here.
They are triangulating us with Romney/Gingrich. Either way, they win. It’s amazing they can fool conservatives with someone who has so blatantly announced he was a big government socialist. If Gingrich could get elected, he would owe nothing to conservatives. He would only owe Pelosi and Reid. And he would probably willing to go much farther than them. If conservatives support Romney/Gingrich they will live to regret the day...
Mittens should really shine in a debate with Obama where he can grin and nod his head in total agreement.
That’s a winner;(
This needs to be repeated. At the end of the day, Gingrich is just an unpolished version of Romney. A vote for Gingrich is a vote for Romney and vice versa.
Willard won’t rock the boat.
It’s academic, because Mitt is the McCain of 2012. He would likely wilt in the general.
Because they want obama for another 4 years. Romney doesn’t stand a chance.
