While Everybody's Breaking Out Old Tapes of Gingrich...
Reaganite Republican ^ | December 05, 2011 | Reaganite Republican

Here's mine-

shredding a MSNBC reporter's loaded question re. Palin's qualifications on the floor of the
2008 Republican National Convention.

I'm  not endorsing ole Newt, yet -actually, I've trashed him over
the Scozzafava debacle, etc on this site- the guy's simply not my first choice.
But one thing we need for this battle is a FIGHTER...
and you do get that with this brilliant -yet flawed- candidate.

I could watch the lib media get smacked around the room like this every day...

And that doesn’t have anything to do with old news no matter how hard some will try to distract us with that old flag.

True, but with Newt we can’t be sure which side he’ll be fighting on.

The MSM is just one factor, among many, and Gingrich brings a lot to the table to lessen its impact.

I’m not thrilled with Newt,

That seems to be everyones thinking. He is ok but not great. The problem is that most will vote for him but they aren’t going to go beyond that. I don’t see Newt filling football stadiums.

The up side is that I assume every sensible conservative voter will go to the polls if we nominate either Romney or Newt. Whether you vote for them or not, those choices guarantee that we need a conservative Congress as a counterbalance to prevent either Obama/Romney's consistent big government policies or Newt's intermittent big government flings from harming the country. It looks like 2012 is the year to focus on Congress as our top priority, and for that we need everyone going to the polls in all 435 Congressional districts and in all 33 Senate elections.

I hope you are right but color me unconvinced at this stage.

His comment about wanting to get rid of the EPA and replace it with the “environmental Solutions Agency” tells me that he’s still the same old big government guy.

On this one point, I'll cut Gingrich some slack.

I've had to live in LA, and then decided to flee LA, in large part due to the smog.

I remember when the tributary rivers to Lake Erie caught on fire.

I despise what China is doing to their environment, and the companies around the world getting off scott-free (literally) for all the damage they are doing to the ecosystem there. The Chinese people deserve a pollution-free existence, just like people everywhere else.

And I hate the job-killing, AGW-propaganda, bureaucratic beast that our own EPA has become.

So if Gingrich has an alternative idea to protect the environment against real threats, while keeping in mind the need to keep real and productive manufacturing happening in this country, I'm all for hearing him out.

It’s a war. They have weaknesses and we have them. We are not going to be invulnerable on all fronts.

After the debates, it was “Ohmygod, nothing is more important than the debates none of our guys can debate worth a damn - we’re in big trouble. Now, looking at having the best debater in politics as our man, its “Ohmygod”, Pelosi and the MSM and going to massacre him because of his baggage.”

I think we are losing sight of the what’s on the other side - that POS Obama that has the worst record - ever. Without empty slogans like Hope and Change and the anti-Bush sentiment he had last time, he’s in big trouble. His whole record is baggage.

Of course they will focus on our guy’s weak spots as we will on theirs. My question is, - serious question - that ‘baggage’ how much is it going to resonate with the swing voters that are gonna decide the election?

The emphasis the debates have had on a presidential election has always been historically exaggerated. Sometimes laughingly so. The hype around them reaches farcical proportions. Whoever ‘wins’ the debates (a highly subjective point) does not necessarily win the election, of course.

Baggage is more serious. It is the stuff of a thousand ads, it creates a narrative which, fair or unfair, is tough to shake off. John Kerry’s past position changes did for him, as they surely will do for Mitt Romney if he wins the nomination. Gingrich, although I do respect him greatly (he is an historian like me! We need to stick together) is a bit of a throwback to the 90s, and not the fresh face that can appeal to independents. I may be wrong. It won’t be the first time.

Yes, all have weaknesses. Yes, we are vulnerable whoever we put up. Every candidate has a past. But, I just feel that if Romney or Gingrich is the nominee they will be running against themselves, as much as against Obama.

I take your point though. The field is what it is. People shouldn’t lose sight of the fact though, that we are electing (hopefully) a president here.
