I can support Governor Perry, but your opinion about his “didn’t have a heart” comment doesn’t make sense. If I was a governor who was working hard to solve an immigration problem created by the federal government, I wouldn’t strike out at those citizens who actually oppose illegal immigration. If I did, I certainly wouldn’t blame them for being heartless. I might be mad at them for not understanding how hard I was trying to fix the situation, but saying they didn’t have a heart if they didn’t support in-state tuition for illegals? That reveals a lot I think. Nevertheless, I also think Perry has the necessary executive experience and enough conservative ideology to make a better president than Newt Gingrich or Mitt Romney.

My gut tells me the "you don't have a heart" comment came from him being unprepared to take the beating he took in the early debates. He was a pinata and I think he wasn't ready to have 8 people hammer on him for an hour. I think the comment was aimed more at those on stage. Still a bad move but that is how I saw it and it still doesn't make it so.

Perry himself said it was not just dumb but wrong because disagreeing with someone on any issue doesn't make them heartless or uncaring.

The “don’t have a heart” comment was referring to those who say that Texas law shouldn’t allow undocumented children (who broke no law) brought into Texas by anyone (primarily illegal immigrants) shouldn’t receive in-state college tuition rate, even though the Federal Government ordered Texas to provide K12 education and health care services to those children. The comment wasn’t referring to those who opposed illegal immigration.
