BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- U.S. Justice Department officials said Monday that they have gotten more than 1,000 calls or emails reporting problems immigrants are having living under Alabama's immigration law.
Tom Perez, assistant attorney general of the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Justice Department, and other Justice Department and U.S. Labor Department officials were in Birmingham on Monday to continue gathering information and listening to stories about the impact the law is having on immigrants and looking for possible civil rights violations.
"The more we hear, as we do our listening, the more concerned we are about the impact of Alabama's immigration law on a wide range of federal rights," Perez said at a press briefing.
The Justice Department last month set up a hot line, 1-855-353-1010 and a website, Hb56@usdoj.gov, for people to report problems and possible civil rights violations from the state immigration law.
Some of the areas or allegations Perez said the Justice Department is concerned about include:
Students of illegal immigrants not going to school out of fear that they or their families may be reported and possibly deported.
Racial profiling by state or local law enforcement officers. "We are hearing troubling reports of individuals being stopped simply because of their appearance," Perez said.

Employers not paying employees who may be illegally in the country.
"All these allegations are very, very troubling," Perez said.
Read comments, priceless
1,000 illegals sent complaints? The other millions of Legal Citizens are not complaining, but they left that out of the article.
It would have to be in the millions.
if you want to see a MASSIVE number of calls... give us a number to call to complain about illegals being in the country
Related from New York Times...Its early yet for a full accounting of the economic damage Alabama has done to itself with its radical new immigration law. Farmers can tally the cost of crops left to rot as workers flee. Governments can calculate the loss of revenues when taxpayers flee. Its harder to measure the price of a ruined business reputation or the value of investments lost or productivity lost as Alabamians stand in line for hours to prove their citizenship in any transaction with the government. Or what the state will ultimately spend fighting off an onslaught of lawsuits, or training and deploying police officers in the widening immigrant dragnet, or paying the cost of diverting scarce resources away from fighting real crimes.
A growing number of Alabamians say the price will be too high, and there is compelling evidence that they are right. Alabama is already at the low end of states in employment and economic vitality. It has long struggled to lure good jobs and shed a history of racial intolerance.
That was turning around and many foreign manufacturers, including Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai and Honda, have set up there. Its business-friendly reputation took a serious blow with the arrest in Tuscaloosa of a visiting Mercedes manager who was caught driving without his license and taken to jail as a potential illegal immigrant.

So? I’m sorry, but why are the illegals even getting a voice in the matter? THEY ARE ILLEGAL. They should go home and use their voices. What about the voices of Americans? The ones who pay the all the blasted taxes? Hmmmm?
Does not mean ANY of the complaints are credible.
How does hiring criminals equate to a “business friendly” environment?
Eisenhower had the right idea on how to handle illegals, we need to make the border mean something again.
It’s easy to get a thousand complaints when the fedgov sets up a special 800 number to take them, and promotes the number on hispanic radio stations.
I doubt Tom Perez would be so fomd of illegals if the vast majority of illegals were from the Orient or from Scandinavia. That they are from Mexico and Central America (but mostly from Mexico) explains why Perez is such a champion of illegals. He is an ethnic bigot.
Too.
Damn.
Bad.
It appears that actual law enforcement is just more that the grinning little criminals can stand.
I guess they will just have to... LEAVE.
.
It’s from the New Duranty Times. ‘Nuff said. I know quite a few people in Alabama, and they LOVE the new immigration law, as do the vast majority of Alabamians.
TWO (2) International companies have just announced that they will start doing business in Alabama this week with either a new plant or office. So much for the German stop being bad for business.
Most people are against the illegals in Alabama or the Law would not have been passed.
I am an Alabama resident.
1,000 illegals who need to be deported.
The story said “immigrants” and you have to have an immigration visa to be an “immigrant” ~ so why would lawful immigrants complain to this Perez puke. He’s the weirdo who tried to kill e-ink ~ a total Luddite!
As long as we are no longer a nation of laws and that's how we run things these days; whoever shouts the loudest, wins.
Unemployment rates have fallen in Alabama amid new legal pressure on companies to comply with a popular immigration reform law.
September was the first full month that the reform was in force, and the unemployment rate fell from 9.8 percent in September to 9.3 percent in October, according to a Nov. 18 report from the state government.
The rates fell from 9.9 percent to 9 percent in Etowah County, from 8.8 percent to 8.1 percent in Marshall county, and from 11.6 percent to 10.6 percent in DeKalb county.
The latest fall in unemployment numbers is proof that American citizens will work, and continues to solidify [the evidence] that self-deportation [by illegal immigrants] due to the Alabama Taxpayer & Citizens Protection Act is occurring, said Chuck Ellis, a city council member in Albertville the main town in Marshall County, northern Alabama.
They aren’t immigrants. They are unarmed combatants - invaders.
The comments are excellent.
The FEDS used our tax money to set up a pro invasion hot line. Guess we know whose side they are on.
Any of them come from Americans?
Illegal aliens are a bunch of whiners and girlymen. We don’t need any more of that here.
