The mainstream news media is filled with awe that Newt Gingrich showed some "compassion" for illegal aliens in last night's GOP presidential debate. A look at his record while in Congress shows this is nothing new.
In fact, Gingrich's leadership in Congress is one of the reasons we have so many illegal aliens today who have been able to stay in this country for 25 years.
That's the supreme irony of Gingrich's pro-amnesty remarks in last night's debate. The man who helped ensure that illegal aliens from the 1980s and 1990s are still here in 2011 asked voters last night to consider the inhumanity of making illegal aliens leave this country after they have sunk such long roots here.
If, while Speaker of the House in the 1990s, Gingrich had shown any leadership in stopping illegal immigration, there would be very few illegal aliens still here from the 1980s and 1990s because they wouldn't have been able to hold payroll jobs.
Nobody pushed him last night to take a pro-amnesty stand. He volunteered it! By focusing on long-term illegal aliens, he took a big risk that the media spotlight (or at least the internet and talk radio spotlight) would shine on his long-term record with those illegal aliens.
What the spotlight will find is that Gingrich worked with Big Business lobbyists to make sure that employers could continue to hire illegal workers, and thus sink roots that would be used by pro-amnesty politicians to justify legalizing them today.
We hear the same arguments from the National Council of La Raza, from the ACLU, from the National Immigration Forum..

As we secure the border, we must make an aggressive and serious effort to deport all criminals, gang members, and any other threats to our society as quickly as possible. We must also tap into the ingenuity of the private sector to better validate who is in the United States legally.
Newt opposed the DREAM Act. However, he did agree with part of the legislation which allowed those who came to the United States illegally as children to serve in the U.S. Military to earn their citizenship, just as foreign nationals are today allowed to do the same.
Furthermore, Newt has proposed giving local communities the authority to allow those with long established roots in the neighborhood a legal residency status, but not citizenship. Newt believes local communities are at a better vantage point to determine if those there illegally should stay or go. Under this system, we will send home those with no family or community ties and quickly deport those who have committed criminal and other destructive acts, while providing minimal disruption to families and communities.

Why would solution have to include any amnesty?
Fence, e-verify, permanent ban for gov contracts, employer fines, fence and state initiatives provide good solution.

Did you read the OP? Do you agree or disagree with the article’s conclusion that it was Newt’s failure of leadership, and alliances with business lobbyists, that led to the massive number of long-term illegals present in the U.S. today?

In 1998 Gingrich stopped employer sanctions from the 1986 bill from being enforced. The INS was finally getting serious about going after employers until Newt intervened.

Exactly. Is it too much to ask that we stop giving benefits to illegals? Stop doing that, and they will have no reason to remain in the US. If you aren't a citizen, then you don't get food stamps, you don't get Section 8, you don't get WIC, you don't get treated at the local public health department, and your kids don't get to go to taxpayer-funded schools. What's so hard about that?
As Roy Beck points out Newt Gingrich is a major reason that this country is overrun with illegal aliens. Contrary to what his cheerleaders say, Newt has been a major part of the problem, not the solution.

This is what the 1986 bill was all about, going after employers. It is the one thing that will actually work, we know it is in states like Arizona where they’ve mandated e-verify. Thanks to Newt he stopped it nationally and now he claims he’s going to fix the mess he created by giving them amnesty.
