NRA - Shame on You!
NRA | 11/23/11 | Self

Posted on 11/23/2011 1:15:58 PM PST by pabianice

I have long been a proud member of the NRA. Today I received an unsolicited DVD from the NRA on home defense. I was instructed that, if I did not want to pay $ 12.95 and keep the DVD, I had to return it to the NRA.

First, this is unlawful. No one may be made to pay for something they did not order, nor are they obligated to return it.

Second, this is very disappointing. I have long found the NRA to be an honest organization made-up of lawful gun owners and others interested in the U.S.'s long tradition of shooting and hunting. This mailing should be immediately disavowed as a mistake and an apology given by the NRA.

Shame on you, NRA. You should know better. And do better.

I’m still suprised the NRA is doing that. It does not seem like them.

Several years ago the NRA sent me a VHS tape and asked me to pay for it or return it. I kept it and several weeks later I started receiving payment demands. I filed a complaint with the post office. A couple of weeks later I received an apology letter from the NRA that told me to keep the tape free of charge.

Years ago, before I stopped Reader's Digest, they sent me an expensive book (first in a series and about $29.00) which I did not solicit.
I called and let them know I did not want it and the person said they would send instructions for return.
A couple months later, I get nasty-grams (never got the instructions for return) and another book.
I called again and said I appreciated the free stuff they kept sending me, and was told to pay up or return them. Trouble is, there was no prepaid return boxes included.

Long story short, it took about 5 months and the threat of a lawyer before they finally sent me the prepaid return packaging.
A lawyer friend said I could have stopped with the "thanks for the free stuff" and told them to shove it.

I cannot cite the law by number but as I understand it, as a non lawyer, in my state of Florida if you receive an unsolicited item or product addressed to you, you are not obligated to pay for or return said item.
I have followed this course on many items in the past 10-12 years and have not been hassled.

Well - as others have stated - if it comes via US mail - if you didn’t order it - it’s yours to do with as you wish.

If you read the form carefully - it suggests you tell them no and return the DVD and the form to them in the provided mailer... it doesn’t SAY you MUST either return it or pay for it. They give you the option to return it cost-free. Doesn’t mean you have to choose that option.

Pretty stoopid trick really.

I had something similar happen to me, so I compromised, not keeping or returning it.

I threw it out.

Look dude, you can decipher anything you want from that letter, all I did was point out the glaring obvious which you seem to be ignoring........

Like I said previously, just sent that PROMO DVD to me and tell the feds and any other agency that comes to arrest you that I have it............

You would have thought they would have learned from the last time they did that several years ago.

As usual, I did not read the junk they sent (due to the volume and the fact it is always just begging for money), just pulled whatever it was (VCR tape?) out of the box, unopened, and filed it with rest of the tapes.

Some months later, the nasty-gram came so I mailed it back to them unopened.

If I want it, I will order it.

It’s not surprising coming from the NRA, I had the same thing happen to me only it was the American Legion. I still have it and am not paying for it.

Yeah, yeah, I know you’re correct. It’s fundamentally a waste of time to dialogue with those who manifest such puerile characteristics. But still, sometimes it’s kinda fun!

GOA...JPFO...SAF...CCRKBA...Neal Knox’s organization...

Any number of alternatives to NRA if they are unsuitable for you...

As a Life Member, I got the DVD also, and returned it in the enclosed postage-paid envelope...Easy enough, and just trying to be neighborly...

I realize I was under no obligation whatsoever to do anything with an unsolicited item sent to me in the mail without my prior consent...

Too bad, because Rob Pincus’ training DVDs are very good, and definitely worth a look...I doubt he had anything to do with this fund raising scheme...

This sounds like the same one I got.

It's on NRA letterhead and the DVD says “American Rifleman presents” Personal Defense Network. “Shooting in Realistic Environments”.

Off topic, but I thought the content was pretty good but my DVD was defective about half way through it.

Regardless. They did send it with a return envelope. More importantly, the next to the last sentence in the second paragraph on page two says “Because you didn't ask for this special DVD, you don't have to participate or send it back and can consider it a free gift. No questions asked.”

Au contraire, mon ami.

Rather it is shame on you for degrading my responses by terming them nonsense.

Brain dead, or merely hanging on?
