I've been following the events at Penn State as they unfold, and like everyone, am horrified at what I've read. But there are two things that have bothered me about this story, that I'm having trouble understanding, keeping in context, and may well provide a viable alternative explanation of what happened.
I floated that a few days ago here (and elsewhere).
Reread my post..maybe I wasn’t clear..I assume that the elder MqQueary found out, when his son was STILL a child, and went to Paterno..
And what exactly did Paterno (the most powerful man at Penn State) do to keep Sandusky off the campus and totally sever ties with him from that point forward? Nothing
If I were his defense attorney, you bet that's what I would be saying.
"So, a bargain is struck."
And that bargain is silence for the prime coaching slot in perpetuity.
You mentioned that Sandusky was practically a next-door neighbor to the McQuearys’. Mike McQueary had known Jerry Sandusky & his kids since he himself was the victim’s age. That might have been enough right there to freeze him into indecision.
OTOH, I think that he was still obligated to go to the cops as soon as he thought things through. I can’t forgive him that.
Whoa, that's an interesting tidbit...
This would explain why Hes still allowed to coach.
Are you referring to McQueary, because Paterno has been fired? I have no idea why McQueary is coaching but Paterno is not.
I just feel like these higher ups fired Paterno to take the heat off themselves. Firing McQueary wouldn't be necessary to do that.
Thanks...I couldn’t get my head around his behavior..especially after I read about his stopping the knife fight..
yea, I think Spanier wants to teach at a Catholic seminary ... and make a movie about it.
Except that wouldn’t have possibly cost him his JOB and maybe blacklisted him for the rest of his life. paterno had THAT much power.
Victim 1 was raped between 2007-2008, so Sandusky’s behavior was undoubtedly continuing on and on with Penn State administrators and coaches feeling that they had covered themselves somehow, legally, by banning Sandusky and having acquired assurances from him. Stupid but probable, IMHO.
Pedophiles have increased urges over time which become increasingly difficult for them to control. They get more experienced and bold as well.
Once McQueary was well into his teenage years he would have become unattractive to a pedophile; so from about 1988 or so and thereafter, Sandusky would have had no interest in McQueary sexually.
Being so interested and dedicated to football and Penn State, it’s very plausible that McQueary would have stayed at Penn State after graduation and continued to work there even with Sandusky having access to the facilities, as the two would simply have an unspoken “understanding” from the early 90’s onward. He has nothing more to fear from Sandusky and simply has to remain silent about what he knows - and he convinces himself that Sandusky is no longer raping or at least he puts it out of his mind and just pursues his career under the wing of Paterno at his beloved Penn State.
The McQueary childhood trauma scenario is certainly plausible. I’ve wondered myself.
Just wondered because sometimes Catholics hire Catholics.
If these were all Catholic men, they may have stuck together.
We don’t know all the facts yet. He could have been told that the investigation shows Sandusky did nothing, and he could have believed them. It’s not like it’s easy to believe that someone you’ve worked with for decades (they weren’t really friends. Paterno is egotistical and thought that Sandusky got too much credit) is a child molester.
Paterno is also not the most powerful man in Happy Valley. If he was, he’d be retiring at the end of the season on his own terms.
Live longer and learn. Such a statement is never true.
And if so, why was nothing done THEN? Or EVER?
What have you heard is going to happen tomorrow? Is Paterno going to show up at Beaver Stadium? And if he doesn’t, are the Nittany going to walk out en masse?
The campus police are larger & better equipped than the local State College police force. When things get out of hand in town on a football weekend, the campus cops are the rapid-react force for the town cops. Somehow the jurisdicutional thing never seems to enter into it when an arrest gets made.
