Gingrich, Perry in fight to face Romney
The Hill ^ | November 9, 2011 | Christian Heinze

...With Cain facing a series of harassment allegations, a lack of campaign organization in the early voting states and questions about his readiness for the job, political observers expect another candidate to emerge as Romney’s rival.

Gingrich and Perry are the most obvious applicants for that role. Rep. Ron Paul’s (Texas) unpopularity with mainstream Republicans makes him unlikely to win, and Gingrich and Perry triple or quadruple everyone else in polling.

...So who’s got the upper hand in the race to become Romney’s rival? Let’s break it down:

Money

Perry is the easy winner here........

Debates

Gingrich is the easy winner here.....

Issues....

The take-away is that both candidates fell from their early heights, in part because their supporters felt they weren’t ideologically pure enough, so it’s difficult to know which of the two they’d prefer...in a new Washington Post/ABC poll....Gingrich nearly doubled Perry’s performance on the question “Who best reflects the core values of the Republican Party?” and he edged out Perry on “Who is the closest to you on the issues?”

Advantage: Gingrich.

Intangibles..........

But if Gingrich takes two of the first three categories, he loses rather badly on the fourth. Perry has been married to his childhood sweetheart for almost 30 years. Gingrich is on his third marriage and has admitted to infidelity in his previous two.

And, yes, Perry is known for being fairly brash, but Gingrich has a famously self-destructive streak and a discipline problem that’s imperiled him throughout his career. Gingrich also last held elective office over a decade ago, while Perry has been an executive of one of the most successful states over the past decade.....

Perry trounces Gingrich on whom Republicans think is most electable, doubling the former Speaker’s support.

Overall

Gingrich takes two categories and Perry takes two, which means....

I like that you make your points without attacking.

I must disagree about needing the one who can out talk Obama. That does not spell strong support to me. It smells desperation. Most people do not LIKE Newt. His debate performances have all been about being “likable” because he knows that is is Achilles heel.

Newt can talk all he wants but he usually ends up shooting himself and others in the foot. Then he just walks away — no big deal. Then there is all his bad personal choices.

I’ll back Perry and hold up his record. We want someone who will be a good (as you say Perry could be great) executive, not one who is never at a loss for words but would end up so wanting as a leader. These coming 8 years HAVE TO COUNT.

....Perry really not very intelligent or very motivated. I don’t think he’d be very aggressive with congress....

Then you haven't been paying attention.

Rick Perry became the 1st Republican Lt Gov in Texas since Reconstruction and with the last election (won after battling a Texas GOP establishment challenge from Rove-Bush and Hutchison) ushered in a GOP super majority. He is extremely motivated and intelligent. The Texas economy and all the work done by Perry to roll back litigation, taxation and regulation is staring you right in the face. And he knows how to select people who will do likewise.

And I guess we are supposed to follow this script? Is that the plan?

Follow whatever you like. Let me know when there is a "plan" or even a campaign that isn't coming off the rails.

Meanwhile, I plan to beat the socialist in the White House and take Congress.

.....Romney or Perry would have stammered their way all the way through a presser like that.

The point is they didn't have to hold a presser like that. It's time Herman Cain's supporters stopped excusing how he has handled each and every bump in his path (and who he has chosen to run his campaign).

Because someone can be "bold" on stage does what? I can think of a lot of "bold" people throughout history that I wouldn't consider backing. That is no yardstick to measure by.

Nobody cares about Perry except for the few psychopaths on this board. Single digits for Perry is where he will remain.

That kind of vitriol is uncalled for. I'm not a Perry supporter for some specific reasons and I could be wrong about those. I'd like to learn more, digest and then decide. Attacks like yours do NOT help the debate and can only hurt the unity that must be achieved after we select the candidate.

Thanks! I am a Perry supporter (obviously), but you are precisely the sort of non-supporter I would prefer to try and debate with, even if the debate gets testy at times; I may not (probably will not) change your mind much if we were to debate, but at least with someone like yourself I wouldn't feel compelled to go ballistic simply to counter equally ballistic - and vitriolic - attacks.

Cain’s in the lead, and the only real threat to Obama. If your boy Perry was in the lead, he’d be getting the media enema.

This country is in deep doo doo. Gingrich is the only one who actually can navigate legislation through congress. Perry really not very intelligent or very motivated. I don’t think he’d be very aggressive with congress.

I find it facinating that people can think that a man who has actually been running a state the size of Texas is "dumb" and the "smart" guy has been basically flitting around the country talking. Those who can....do, those who can not do....teach. Newt is a teacher. He's a grand teacher, but he is not a doer if he was he would have been in cogress doing.

CW’s point is well taken...there’s a difference in liking to hear Newt talk, which just about all of us do, and in liking Newt.

Newt has smartly tailored his debate appearances to make himself the audience’s “good guy” by being nice to the others and by attacking Obama but most of all by attacking the news media and the ones posing the questions.

DUH...what’s not to like about that?

Again, though, the bottom line is that although we like to hear that as only Newt can do it, it doesn’t mean we like Newt the man.

Perry has a knack for governance. Where he messed up which was a tiny percentage of his governance, he knew when to change course and did so. Perry is an executive leader, yes, with a Texas flair and a rural background, but executive is where he shines.

Newt is what he is, and that has not been an executive leader. He knows issues and on the ground political facts like no other and he can outtalk anyone.

Talk is important, but as entertaining and enlightening as it can be, doesn’t live up to its billing.

ROTFLOL---you got that right. Perry is "battling it out" with Huntsman for last place.

Perry has nothing left but agit prop.....and his pimponistas are relentless in that fools' game.

Course Mexico, the Third World, and his Islamic pals are all hellbent on getting Perry elected.......they need a jerk like Perry to put their interests ahead of US ntl interests. God knows the secret insider deals opportunistic Perry made to get money and illegal votes.

A Perry WH would gladly finance reconquista with our tax dollars. And think of all those triumphal mosques that can be built with US tax dollars.

Perry is not called "the human price tag" for nothing.

Newt was the most effective Republican law maker in congress in the past fifty years. Besides Ronald Reagan, nobody has done more than Newt Gingrich in advancing the Conservative agenda. Remember the "Contract with America"? Not a doer? Are you serious?

I don’t know if you saw Newt take “Center Seat” on Bret Baier’s show on Fox last night. He isn’t all that great answering pointed questions. He’s evasive, filibusters and the fact that he thinks he’s the smartest man in the room, screams at you. He is not presidential and he is not running to fix this mess but rather to BE president (where everyone will have to be subjected to his brilliance daily).

The Perrywinkies don’t realize that the dems will bring up the old unproven gay stuff from Texas.

The difference will be scurrelous gay guys crying for the cameras.

None of it will be true, but truth doesn’t matter anymore.

They hope to help Rick gain by casting their lot with the Axlerod crowd smearing Cain.

There used to be a large number of Conservatives on this forum who were logical thinkers and who were especially realistic. They listened to each others points and opinions, then gave theirs with all due respect.

Today? It has become a completely childish, chaotic, playground dirt fight. There is no longer any sense of honor or respect. You can present true facts and positive information about a candidate like Perry, but it is completely ignored.

Instead, emotionalism seems to have become the required trait. Blind loyalty, deep emotional outbursts, crass insults and hostile personal attacks has become the norm. There is no way we can win this election against such a powerful force if we do not drop this insanity and start joining together in a unified effort to present a fully qualified and tested candidate like Rick Perry.

Picking long-shot, inexperienced, disorganized and underfunded candidates like Cain is the kind of insanity I am referring to. You can also throw Blind Loyalty into that list.
