As I postulated in during the presidential campaign 2007, the EU has spent itself into the ground and cannot be prevented from breaking up. This was clear to them by the end of 2006.
Everything they have done since then in North America and the Mideast, however risky or likely to fail has been done with an eye towards achieving what they can before the spectacular failure of socialism in Europe causes a backlash against socialism in general world wide.
That was my assessment then and I stand by it now. They frantically Hope to stay in power after the financial collapse of Europe by making their power sphere worldwide before then.
I am betting against their being able to pull it off.

I like your assessment, Edd. I also think it's prescient. We've all been watching the teetering edifice of global Socialism become weaker and weaker since Obama's election, and with the rise of the American Tea Party, I think we'll see it finally kicked over into the dust of history.
As you said, they're frantically trying to beat the clock to the final countdown, when they're finally thrown out of power next year. It's why Pelosi, Reid, and Obama (and their minions) have been in a mad dash to re-write the rules of Western civilization as fast as they can. They're desperate to forestall the inevitable and historic sea change that's coming.
I think history will show that taking the House back from the Democrats in 2010 was the moment when the American republic was saved from certain extinction.
