Alamosa Colorado & Adams College versus Denver & University of Colorado (Vanity)
10/19/2011 | me

I am trying to help my son, an Army vet, make a choice between going to school in Denver versus Alamosa, Colorado. He has lived a couple of months in both places and is under the impression Adams College is conservative, so maybe leaning in that direction. We realize there are vast differences between these two places, but I thought it would be helpful to get FR comments.

CU is quite liberal and lots of drugs and parties. There is a riot over something stupid once in a while.

What school is NOT inportant, what he does AFTER school is. Might I suggest a GOOD trade school so he will NEVER lack for employment.

I like Alamosa, but know nothing of the university. Give me a choice between small town or big city, and I’ll pick small town every time.

FWIW, I’ve been to Alamosa several times. Cool little town! Seemed like kind of a throwback to an earlier time.

Alamosa is an itsy-bitsy town a long ways from anywhere. It’s in the San Luis Valley, which has lots of irrigated farmland and is situated between the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan mountain ranges, two of the most beautiful in CO. Hiking, hunting, XC-skiing, fishing, etc. But the valley itself is not particularly attractive. It gets VERY COLD in the winter. Summers have beautiful weather.

Boulder is essentially a suburb of Denver and probably in the top ten cities in the country for liberal activism. Whole lot of stuff to do in Boulder and Denver, though. It also isn’t far from the mountains, but the close-by mountains tend to be heaviliy populated with Denverites.

If your son is outdoor-oriented, he might do well in Alamosa. If he likes parties, he’d probably be happier in Boulder.

Our daughter was a conservative until she went to UC at Boulder...now she is a flaming liberal environmentalist wacko. I read an article recently that said there is only ONE professor at Boulder that is not a flaming liberal. The whole town is the same way.

My son and I have spent a lot of time in and around Alamosa looking for old railroad cars to buy (we now have 4). Alamosa is a farming community with lots of nice people. We have had long conservations with literally hundreds of locals on the farms and in the businesses and government offices and a lot of them know their neighbors well. Adams College seems very quaint and it is quite small. We met a female Adams College student who was from out of state and was there on a track scholarship as a runner. Nice kid. Not a lot to do there other than ride tourist trains in Alamosa and the Cumbres & Toltec (where we are members). The closest ski resort is at beautiful Wolf Creek Pass and hour or two away. If you own a sand rail, there is a very popular sand dune park east of Alamosa.

Daughter went to Adams undergrad and then to CU law so she should have a good perspective. I’ll check with her and let you know. The free tuition at CSU for vets is a good deal too. Pretty much all the Colorado schools are going to have good access to the outdoors. It was 17 this morning in Alamosa.

Actually, don’t need to check on CU - it’s whacked out left. I’ll check on Adams.

Not really sure what he wants to study. He was mechanic in the Army and likes that sort of thing, but his back got messed up in Iraq and he has had hard time trying to figure out things he would like to do that do not involve long periods of standing or sitting. If economy was not so bad, I think something like an auto dealership service manager would be the type of thing he would be suited to do.

As I said, our daughter went to both schools so I asked her if CU is a 10 on the leftist scale what would Adams be? Her opinion is that ASC would be maybe a 7. Of course, my impression is that most schools are leftist so a 7 might be average.

I have a son that went to CSU and I know from talking with him that CSU has plenty of leftist professors as well. Of course, free tuition is hard to beat.

Sorry to hear about his back.

Tell him thanks for his service.

Community colleges are sometimes underrated. Universities sometimes overrated. Sometimes nice to get the first two years at a community college and transfer the credit. Also take the CLEP to get college credit.

Is he leaning toward a business degree.

I have a son that went and graduated at Metro and a daughter that went to and graduated at Regis. Regis seemed to be a pretty good school.

I graduated from CU in 1964, went to USAF Officer Training School, and never looked back at what, sadly, had been taken over by the liberals/socialists in the student body and faculty. CU remains that way to this day. Example: it took the CU Board of Regents several years to fire loony, fraudulent “Professor” Ward Churchill, who was guilty of plagiarism and academic misconduct, and who had almost unanimous support from the leftist faculty. Churchill’s firing should have been done years sooner.

I think I will vote for Alamosa. He was born in ND and has lived mostly in cooler places. He hates Florida so the weather should not be an issue. Wow 17 seems cold for this time of year!

You are correct. I went to college in Minot ND for a little while. Small class sizes were a huge plus as far as I was concerned. Thanks to everyone for all the good info!
