Saturday evening was an occasion for visiting some old friends who live in lower Manhattan, just a couple of garbage bag throws from Zuccotti Park, ground zero of the Occupy Wall Street squatter encampment. So, late in the evening, we lingered briefly on Liberty Street for a look at these folks who have laid claim to turf not their own. There was a guy waving a Chinese flag, another guy toting a guitar; people sitting at folding tables, people milling around, others sitting cross-legged on the ground. There were placards about greed and corruption. It was pretty much what wed already inferred from the out-sized press coverage devoted to this scene. A camping project, mixing social adventure with witless protest and an angry sense of entitlement. Any great city attracts cranks, but there is a hooligan edge to this occupation.
It left me sad for a lot of reasons, but the one Ill mention here is the long trashing of lower Manhattan. Which, over the past decade, has already been through quite enough. On this date, 10 years ago, smoke was still rising from the massive wreck of the World Trade Center. What was once a vibrant hub of commerce, offices, shops, restaurants, had become a scene of grief and ruin. By stages, the wreckage was cleared away. But for years, the crater remained. In the summer of 2010, as something new finally began to take real shape, along came Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf and his wife, Daisy Khan. In the name of bridging divides, they spawned a season of furious controversy, ripping open emotional wounds with their plans for a Cordoba House Islamic community center and mosque right down the block from the site of the Sept. 11 Islamist attacks.

This is how “white flight” began in Detroit.
This has to be hurting NYC tourism. My mother-in-law had been talking about taking a trip to New York and now says she doesn’t want to go.
“This is how white flight began in Detroit.”
And we all know how that turned out. For the last ten years there has been a major outflow of people leaving New York. We all know the scenario: Once the tax base and the key producers are gone the city goes into a downward spiral.
These shiftless and clueless hooligans are simply into trashing things like other people’s property, the rights of their fellow citizens, capitalism, government (excepting foreign dictatorships), and productive people they destest for their success.
Excellent post. Add in the 1919 Wall Street explosion that killed and maimed so many people (mostly secretaries and low paid office workers) and you’ve got the tragic tale of that cursed area.
Bloomberg should have realized the symbolism of letting these monsters into lower Manhattan. But then he has proven to me - over and over again - that making billions of dollars seems to have nothing to do with good sense, good judgement or a love of history. But then he’s a Bostonian, not a born and bred New Yorker.
Theyre being coordinated by straight up anarchists and socialists, but much more worrisome is this group calling themselves WE ARE LEGION and ANONYMOUS. You see their bizarre mask in almost every news shot.
Do a little googling of who they are and you will be shocked at how demonic and evil they are and what their objective is.
It also answers a question I had about who Leftist talk radio host Norman Goldman was talking about when over the last several weeks he has been asking on his radio show for Anonymous to rig the election and wipe out Republican votes.
Let me think, Who elected the useless Mayor of N.Y.?
Oh now I remember, the voters. How’s that working out for you now.
What state are you from, newbie?
A thing about Manhattan is that you can be a couple of blocks away from a "big event" and be oblivious to it. Zuccotti Park is adjacent to the new WTC and you can view the WTC without bothering with the park. From the WTC you can walk to the Wall Street area just to the south, the South Street Seaport to the east, Tribeca and Soho to the north or even to Chinatown. Uptown, in what is called Midtown, you needn't bother with Times Square to do what you will.
The problem is that tourists don’t realize that. That’s why they’re called tourists rather than locals, lol. All they see is that freaks are running all over Manhattan. As you know, most tourists barely get out of Times Square, lol, and the footage from that nasty little march was not good.
To maybe add some more perspective to the thing, Manhattan absorbs nearly 1.5 million commuters each workday. And a considerable number of tourists to boot. The demonstrators are of an insignificant number in comparison.
Lower?
?
Right on; Idiot voters in New York (and other liberal cities) who keep voting in demonrat scum, and who now are complaining about what the bottom-feeding filth, that IS the base of the demonrats, are doing garner no sympathy.
You get what you vote for. All these liberal whackjobs are protesting in mostly liberal areas. Boise tried an “occupation” of the state capitol area, and 6 idiots showed up.
Why would that matter, although you can be sure it is not New York.
