There's nothing worse than a bored law enforcement officer, as a few Beverly, Massachusetts residents learned firsthand when the local police went around checking vehicles for unlocked doors and open windows. Owners received warnings for failing to protect their property and officers proceeded to lock every door they could, including vehicles with their keys still inside.

I leave the widdows open on my SUV when my 85 lb. Pitador and 8 mo. old 80 Lb. Great Dane puppy are in it. Odd, never a break in while they, or either one, have been in the vehicle.
“I leave my windows down and doors unlocked so people wont break the windows to get in the car - which has happened to me twice in the past.”
Happened to me twice before I got smart enough to leave the car unlocked.
I wouldn’t be surprised if these unlocked vehicles get towed away and impounded!
Sounds like a bunch of under-worked, bored cops probably over broadly interpreting some stupid law.
Some of us leave our cars unlocked for a reason.
I have one with a canvas top. If I lock the doors, all a crook has to do is slice the roof with a Knife and he is in.
It is cheaper to let them open the door.
(plain truth: you CAN NOT secure a convertible.)
Sounds like they may be in bed with the locksmith companies, like LE has been with tow truck/wrecking yard companies for years and years now.
What the cops are telling us is that the victims (or potential victims) are the cause of crime, not the criminals.

No problem. They can just shoot your dogs before they lock your doors for you.
Well, it IS Massachusettes after all.
Massachusetts——That figures.

The short answer is they have too many police officers...save the taxpayers some money and lay off a couple...
yup, i did the same thing when i lived on St.Croix... you just don't leave anything inside the car, period.
Had it happen to me once.
I don’t keep anything of my value in my car.
Us Jeep owners with soft tops never lock our vehicles - lock the doors and you're just asking to get your $2,000 top slashed.
Owners received warnings for failing to protect their property....
?? So they have a Protect Your Property Law on the books?? If not how can you “warn” someone?? But it is really nice to know that this town has no crime, no outstanding warrants etc.....
We had a cop open our mailbox and then asked us if we knew it was open and proceeded to read the riot act about mailboxes. Excuse me, but we’re out in the country and the mailman isn’t going to deliver the mail to the front door. Besides that, the cop might want to think twice since messing with mailboxes is a federal offense. I played along with the bozo but cussed a blue streak as I slammed it shut when he left. Idiot.
I don't think that's any solution.
Small world....my grandmother owned a house up a hill looking down on Yellowcliff. I used to love St Croix but people tell me it’s gotten pretty bad.
Busybody would-be commissars in Marxachusetts.
End of story.
damn straight, i lived on the west end in Frederiksted, i moved back to the states cause i felt like a fugitive from the law of statistics...
