Desensitizing recruits in various ways is an important element, especially if they hope to create (or enlarge) a cadre that is willing to commit violence. Remember the Weathermen's "smash monogany" program?

[The Weather Underground] initiated a 'smash monogamy' campaign to destroy bourgeois sexual hang-ups: Once monogamy was smashed, couples who in some cases had been together for years were harangued until they admitted their 'political errors' and split apart. "The next logical step was group sex. One of the last taboos was homosexuality, and the Weather command forced itself toward experimentation in this direction, instructing male and female cadres to 'make it' with members of the same sex.

Yes. Combine that with a winter occupation and all the physical toughness that entails and you also have something analogous to the SEALS Hell Week. Add drugs and you have the possibility of berserker behavior. Imagine being able to direct such outbursts.

The world sees chaos, but this is highly disciplined at the upper levels. Also, I am thinking of how many of these kids are into multi-player online games. People can laugh, but they learn tactics and strategy there, as well as coordinating actions with others. Some of those gamers have even developed sideline businesses selling various game trophies/powers/spells in the real world, for real money. They aren’t all stupid or ignorant.
