What Would William F. Buckley Do?
Lipstick 2012 ^ | October 5, 2011 | Jeanette Pryor

First, let me assure my friends that the rumors of my suicide have been greatly exaggerated.

A brilliant young Machiavelli in Topeka told me that politics is more like poker than chess. We do not know what’s in the hands of the other players.

We will never know what factors went into Sarah’s decision. Yes, it is heartbreaking for those of us who thought she articulated an effective platform, but we do not have time to waste postulating her reasons for not running for president.

Hours after the accident aboard Apollo 13, heroes Swigert and Haise had a fear-induced momentary melt-down and began to blame one another for their predicament. Jim Lovell restored order and focus by telling the men, “We can go arround this for hours and hours and, when we’re all done, we’ll be right back here where we started. So Gentlemen, let’s get to work and go home.”

Lovell echoed man on the ground, Gene Kranz, who was telling the NASA gray matter, “Gentlemen, let’s work the problem.”

My profound conviction that Sarah would run was based on an obviously faulty analysis of her actions while leading the Tea Party and the apparent lack of candidate articulating the ideas embraced by the conservative base; the criteria she stated would dictate her decision to run.

I am deeply sorry I was wrong. I regret the loss of Sarah’s “Energy Revolution” platform and I wish her and the her family all the very best.

(Brief pause for a few tears.)

Back to work.

It’s time to work the problem.

Buckley would go for the most conservative candidate that is electable. That might be Cain, that might be Perry...and frankly (and I personally think, probably) it might be Romney. Just the reality.

Amen!

I invested considerable capital in SP; her agenda and approach to middle America resonated our heartstrings.

Let’s get down to the business at hand, now.

At this juncture you have the preferred sequence right! Cain, then Perry, then Romney as last resort.

Reality sandwiches are hard to swallow.

“Buckley would go for the most conservative candidate that is electable.”

Didn’t Buckley himself run for mayor of NYC with no chance of winning? I guess he voted for the other guy...who had a better chance of winning.

I’ll repeat what I said on another earlier post: I’m deeply disapointed, but not foolish enough to sit out the election or write in Palin if polling next November shows it is a close race.

But if the GOP also-ran is well ahead, or well behind, I will write in Palin’s name in a minute, and will under no circumstance send one nickel the GOP’s way. What limited ability I have to support candidates financially will go to worthy candidates; I’m done with the feckless GOP - it has truly earned the moniker, “the stupid party”. It is also hopelessly corrupt, if only slightly less so than the dems. All we’ll be doing if the GOP takes over in January 2013 is switching one set of cronies for another.

Buckley was trying to split the vote with Lindsay who was the original RINO Republican so that the Democrat would win.

Better to be led by a Democrat that owns up to the fact, than a Democrat in drag.

I’m trying very hard to buck up. Perhaps tomorrow, when my head stops swirling.

Thanks for the pep talk, Jeanette. You’re always a voice of reason.

We’re here for the duration... SP was my ideal candidate; she could have been the first woman US President. It was her’s for the taking.

She has apparently opted out- the way God works the mantle passes...

Herman Cain was my first thought- what was yours?

He also support Joe Lieberman over the Pubbie incumbent US Senator. Can’t remember his name, but the guy went on to become the CT governor (I), that instituted the state income tax.

As of today, Buckley would go for Perry. If Perry proves that he is really, really not electable, then he would back Romney. Maybe after Perry he might look at Cain.

That may or may not be the metaphysically right answer...but that is what Buckley would do.

Yes, Herman was also my first thought - after I moved past the initial shock of Sarah's announcement. But it was only a fleeting thought.

My thoughts of the race tonight are unfocused and dispersed. I have no energy for the presidential race at this moment. The furthest I can see, is voting for our nominee, as long as it's not Romney or Paul.

I'm just sick about this.

Indeed. I fear that Romney will be the GOP Candidate and that if the Dems don’t think Zero can beat him they will run Hillary and he’ll be crushed. Four more years of Democrat governance and the Republic will be no more.

Polls indicate that Romney does best head to head against Obama and Ron Paul does 2nd best against Obama. Everyone else is pretty much bunched up together.

We know how the Bible ends this age; we just don’t know when. We must endeavour to do what we can until such time!

SP said if there was a viable conservative candidate she wouldn’t need to run.

I would say at this juncture it would have to be HeMan Cain
