The world is filled with curious questions. Why are we here? Why do we hate tomatoes but love ketchup? Why do Americans love crossovers? Why are there 150 brand-new 1997 Dodge Neon models with zero miles on the odometer up for sale in Singapore?

“Just ask the guys who own 60’s vintage 4 door Plymouth Vaniants with slant 6’s.”

My ‘65 had a 318, but was otherwise a great car, if primitive. Unfortunately, one day I was following a (then) brand new MBZ 450SEL on a slick highway when traffic came to sudden stop and I made the rapid executive decision to ram the thing into the guard rail as opposed to paying for some guy’s MBZ for 3+ years, LOL.

There’s a guy around the corner from me with a ‘65 convertible Valiant.

Warning: Do not use when cruising for babes!

I still drive my ‘95 Neon. My wife tells me to get rid of it, but it’s fun to drive and gets 35 mpg. The Headgaskets blow like clockwork @ 60K miles, but they drive pretty good for a Crapbox. Handling, steering feel, etc. are all above average and better than many modern crapboxes.

My 1997 Plymouth Neon just rolled over 190,000 miles. It's got a few bolt-ons and some suspension tweaks. It's an honest 15 sec. car, and it corners on rails. It's a fun, rattly crapbox that surprises much more expensive cars. I get 33 mpg while thrashing the hell out of it. The head gasket problems go away if you get the MLS (multi-layer steel) head gasket.

...and yes, my paint is falling off. This was mainly a problem with the base model white and lapis lazuli colors (see a Cornflower Blue Crayola crayon for reference).

“I says they’re going for $1,350 each.”

You’d almost have to be able to part it out for many more times than that amount. I haven’t read the article but is that Singapore dollars or US dollars?

I wonder if any of them are SRT4’s?

Not in 1997. SRT-4's came out during the 2nd Gen Neon run in model year 2003.

My guess: Someone bought them to be smuggled into Indonesia or possibly China.

1997 economic crisis hit, and the smugglers lost their cash, their contacts in the Indonesian Gov’t were arrested and/or lost power with Suharto in early 1998. Given the sensitive nature of this and the fact that smugglers are often Gov’t officials or their close friends, one can’t simply advertise one suddenly has 150 cars for sale.

Moreover, they are probably left-hand steering anyway so couldn’t be used in Singapore.

Hmmm....

I wonder if any are the Prototypes with their 3 cylinder direct injected externally charged 2 stroke engine(s) they were playing with back then...

Yes they had a serious 2 stroke engine R & D program going on...

Weirder things have happened...

For some reason, the boys preferred it more than the girls did.
Women are more curious than men. They want to see where they're going, not where they've been.

I just looked up Valiant prices. ‘67 “100” 4 door with 6 cyl (10% deduction) gets you $4300 in absolute perfect condition in NADA, and they are notoriously high. I see those traded hands in the $1500-2500 range all the time. No one wants them and no one likes them. I see Ford Falcons do better.

If anyone is looking to get into the hobby on the cheap, here is the car.

14 years from now, they’re going to be find useless and unwanted Chevy Volts in storage.

They won't be worth as much as the Neons. The Volts batteries will have exploded sitting that long and they will be all corroded by acid.
