NASA Advances Evaluation of Piantellis LENR Research
Posted on September 28, 2011 by Steven B. Krivit Multiple sources have confirmed to New Energy Times that a team comprising NASA engineers and an investment group from the U.S. is expanding its interest in the low-energy nuclear reaction research of Italian biophysicist Francesco Piantelli. A meeting with the group and representatives of Piantelli will take place in the next few days.
According to Dennis Bushnell, chief scientist at NASAs Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, NASA was working months ago on experiments based on Piantellis research.
Piantellis work with LENR goes back two decades and includes two dozen scientific publications and conference presentations. Piantelli and his colleagues only significant challenge came from a group at CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, but Piantellis group published an effective rebuttal.
The Piantelli groups nickel-hydrogen LENR work remains the most promising demonstration of LENR technology. New Energy Times wrote two feature articles on Piantellis work in 2008. We also wrote a summary of the work in the Wiley and Sons Nuclear Energy Encyclopedia, excerpted as follows:
************************************ Whereas electrolytic D/Pd experiments have typically produced scientifically meaningful levels of excess heat, such effects were generally observed only in the milliwatt range. The Piantelli groups Ni-H gas experiments produced excess heat in the tens of watts.
The researchers explain that an anomalous heating effect in the Ni-H cell takes place when a cell containing a nickel rod is maintained at temperatures above a critical value and is filled with gaseous hydrogen at subatmospheric pressures. The critical value is obtained by a heater in the cell that provides constant input power to initially raise and keep the cell temperature at its working value, about 700K. When the heat production rises above the equilibrium condition, the authors identify this as the excited state. Because the experiment can run in the excited state for months a time, the researchers were also able to observe sporadic evidence of both neutrons and gamma rays, which are generally hard to detect in LENR systems because those experiment run for much shorter periods.
Whereas excess-heat-producing electrolytic D/Pd experiments typically ran for days before the electrode corroded or the researcher stopped replenishing electrolyte, the Piantelli groups hydrogen gas experiments ran continuously in a stable state for months at a time. In November 1998, the group reported two experiments in Il Nuovo Cimento.
Cell A produced 38.9 +/-1.5 watts of heat, and cell B produced 23.0 +/-1.3 watts of heat. The cells produced excess power continuously at a slowly increasing rate during that period: cell A for 278 days; cell B for 319 days. The integrated excess energy was 900 MJ for cell A and 600 MJ for cell B. ************************************
New Energy Times has published a bibliography of papers (and download links where available) from the Piantelli group here. The list includes Piantellis patent applications. Among other things, the Piantelli work requires very specific surface preparation performed under an ultra-high vacuum.
A few related events happened in September.
On Sept. 2, Samantha McRoskey, an analyst with Diligence Global Business Intelligence, representing an anonymous investor, contacted New Energy Times to learn more about Ni-H LENR research. We directed her to our published reports and analysis.
On Sept. 5 and 6, a team comprising representatives from an investment group and NASA visited Andrea Rossis showroom in Bologna. The team went there with an explicit agreement about test parameters and opportunities to observe and evaluate Rossis claims. They did not observe any positive results.
On Sept. 22, NASA conducted a LENR Innovation Forum workshop at Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Speakers included NASA scientists Joseph Zawodny, Gustave Fralick, Michael Nelson, Jim Dunn and Dennis Bushnell and retired University of Illinois professor George Miley.
At the meeting, Bushnell said that LENR has a strong potential for a new source of energy. He was optimistic about nickel powder LENR solutions.
The temperature you can get out of [LENR] is interesting, Bushnell said. Weve had to be careful [in our research in] terms of the energetics. I dont think there is a power [limitation] problem.
I think the problem now is of raw courage to look into something that is new. Weve been fortunate to have a center director at Langley that has the courage to support us to do this. Weve been at it for three or four years.
The U.S. efforts on this, for reasons I dont understand, havent gone to the Widom-Larsen theory. They also havent gone to try to understand the 18 years of hydrogen-nickel [work] with really superb intellectual content. We need to get off of the Pons-Fleischmann electrochemistry and get into flow systems.

I will be permitted by agreements I made with sources to tell more of the story in several months from now.

Andrea Rossi Gives Firm Date for First Public E-Cat Test and Results
Featured, October E-Cat Demonstration by admin
Were just a few short days away from October 2011 a month that E-Cat followers have been awaiting with eager anticipation. According to Andrea Rossi, things are progressing smoothly in regards to the scheduled public testing of his E-Cats and the delivery of the first 1 MW plant to the as-yet-unknown customer. Rossi has started to provide some idea of what to expect in October regarding his power plant:
By half October we will explain exactly what follows:
1- where the 1 MW plant will be tested
2- all the (not confidential) characteristics of the 1MW plant (the complementary part is more reactors, of a new type that in the meantime we have developed)
3- possibly, who is the Customer, if the Customer will allow us to communicate his name.
He has also provided information about the testing of a single E-Cat unit that will start shortly in Uppsala, Sweden. He says that selected scientists from various countries have been invited to attend this testing, along with selected scientific journalists (but doesnt mention who has accepted invitations).
Rossi stated, On the 7th you should find in the net the report and video of the test of October 6th regarding one cluster of the modules of the 1 MW plant.
It appears that this test on October 6th is an important part of the unveiling of the E-Cat. It might actually be a more useful demonstration of his invention than the 1 MW plant testing, since those involved in the test will be able to focus their attention on one unit, rather than a multi E-Cat power plant. At any rate, we now have a date to circle on our calendars, and we should soon find out if this event has been worth the wait!

All this tech has to do is produce enough heat for steam at a net cost of generation that equals at least coal and even better fission. If we can do that at any feasible scale we are in business.
Now no customer name, what a scam....October is now meaningless.....fraud
Should I assume those are the same unnamed sources used for the above article?
Your result for The Which Stupid Creature Are You Test...
You scored extremely high on opinionation, very low on knowledge, very low on usefulness, and very high on loudness factor.
The gullible calling others “gulls” (whatever that means) is just a petty intimidation tactic and it doesn’t work.
It's a Miracle! You Scored
With pictures even. Yippeeeeeee! I liked the ones of the Rossi Atomic Powered Water Heater too.
The customer's name is completely irrelevant. The ONLY thing that matters is the data from the tests.
No, the credibility of the data recorder is more important than the data, for without credibility the data has no value. This is why it would be nice to have a customer with some stature, who would not want their company's name associated with a fiasco.
For example, if NYC's Con Edison came out with a statement "We have been using an E-cat system in our metropolitan steam heating plant for the last few months, and can attest that the device produces net energy as stated, and generates energy at profitable levels", then things would be settled as far as public opinion was concerned, without regard to the statements of anybody else.
I repeat. The customer's name is irrelevant. What "is" relevant are the names and qualifications of the people doing the testing, the exact nature of the test, and the data therefrom.
And as near as I can tell from post #4, the customer's name and the location of the 1MW test will POSSIBLY be revealed on 6 October (when the single E-Cat test will be done at U. of Upsala).
This does NOT rule out the possibility that the customer's name will be revealed on the date of the test of the 1MW unit later in the month, and, in fact will almost certainly take place then. Getting the customer's name a couple of weeks early is "gravy".
Are you kidding?
The only way any of this testing is meaningful if the customer is a paying one, we know who it is, and the customer takes delivery of the 1MN to test it themselves totally independent of Rossi.
This is what he promised, and he is doing a classic con artist bait and switch.
Now we will only have his word ....... which is absolutely worthless based on his past history of lies and scams ripping off millions.
I knew he was a con artist, I knew he was going to pull something.....not even going to put on a good show...only trying to miss-direct and obfuscate.
B - A - L - O - N - E - Y
This test is supposed to be a fully running commercial plant which means it has to be hooked up as if it is going to supply power to actual customers.
This test has to have generators and actual power generation to count.
This is what happens when a product is delivered to a paying customer for evaluation, the customer actually hooks it up and simulates the use of the product in this application.
Who ever is feeding you this junk has no idea how a new product is delivered to a customer and tested .... it doesn’t matter what product is. They are all tested using the same process.
Kevmo, you said the guy would deliver in October and we would all know without a doubt this is legit.
We don’t, you were wrong.......we still say it is a scam, more so than ever.
This certainly didn’t live up to your expectation of proving you right and us wrong.
On that score, you have FAILED. Also, if you had any idea that Rossi was going to pull this, you wouldn’t have had this high of expectation of being proven right.
YOU GOT FOOLED< ADMIT IT
No, I am not "kidding".
"The only way any of this testing is meaningful if the customer is a paying one, we know who it is, and the customer takes delivery of the 1MN to test it themselves totally independent of Rossi."
The Oct. 6 test is not the promised 1MW plant/test. That is, to the best that I can tell from Rossi's comment, "on" exactly as promised.
And YOU don't get to decide the conditions to determine if the testing is "meaningful" for anyone other than yourself.
Sorry, but that scenario is not, and never has been the plan for the 1MW test. The 1MW system is to provide HEAT only, not electricity. Rossi has been clear on that from day 1. Generation of electricity is, according to Rossi, six months or so away.
"This is what happens when a product is delivered to a paying customer for evaluation, the customer actually hooks it up and simulates the use of the product in this application."
And since we don't currently know either the customer or the application, we have no way to tell if the above is not the case.
