Red Red Wine was a massive hit for reggae group UB40 in the UK and the US in the 80s. The British band had heard Tony Tribes 1969 Trojan single and there is a story, possibly apocryphal, that they assumed the N. Diamond accredited on Tribes record as the composer was the name of some obscure Jamaican Rastafarian contemporary of Bob Marley.
Only when their version took off did they realise the song was originally a smooth, sad ballad of lost love penned by pop singer/songwriter extraordinaire Neil Diamond whod had a modest Billboard hit with it in 1968

Not very nice people. There was some story how they beat some people up plus other stories about the members of UB 40.
Being originally from Belize, I grew up listening to ‘Red Red Wine’. Very popular song down there, both the reggae version and ballad version of it.
sadly, I remember....
Hoo day?
the name ub40 came from the document # of the British unemployment benefits form that you had to fill out to claim the dole. I was a teenager in Britain when the band was popular. I thought they sucked.
“Who remembers Red Red Wine by UB40?”
Sure, I even remember when I first heard it, thinking that’s a differnt twist to that old Neil Diamond song.
I remember that from a line in The Bangles’ ‘Going Down to Liverpool’, “Hey there / Where you going with that UB40 in your hand....”
LoL!

“”Red, red wine
Goes to my head
Makes me forget that I
Still need her so
Red, red wine
It`s up to you
All I can do I`ve done
memories won`t go
memories won`t go
I just thought that with time
Thoughts of you would leave my head
I was wrong, now I find
Just one thing makes me forget
Red, red wine
Stay close to me
Don`t let me be in love
It`s tearin` apart
My blue, blue heart
I just thought that with time
Thoughts of you would leave my head
I was wrong now I find
Just one thing makes me forget
Red, red wine
Stay close to me
Don’t let me be in love
It’s tearin’ apart
My blue, blue heart
-—Red Red Wine Regge Section-—
Red red wine you make me feel so fine

Red red wine you make me feel so fine
Monkey pack him rizla pon the sweet dep line
Red red wine you give me whole heap of zing
Whole heap of zing mek me do me own thing
Red red wine you know of love
Your kind of loving like a blessing from above
Red red wine I love you right from the start
Right from the start with all of my heart
Red red wine in a 80`s style
Red red wine in a modern beat style, yeah
(Chorus)
Give me little time, help me clear up me mind
Give me little time, help me clear up me mind
Give me Red wine because it make me feel fine

Red red wine in a 80`s style
Red red wine in a modern beat style, yeah.””
I went to a Neil Diamond concert back in the 90s, where he talked about having written that song and it never really took off, until UB40 sang it their style. I hadn’t known that it was a Neil Diamond song before that.
I remember it - the only place I ever heard it was at the local roller skating rink.
Thank you for the lyrics. I’ve wondered for years what the hell the “rap” part words were. Glad to know it was intelligible.
Oops, UN-intelligible!
I have to agree. I remember thinking “this is utter crap” the first time I heard that song. Maybe if I’d been drunk at 13 it would have sounded better.
“Burn bad ganja pon him little rowing boat” - what boat owner hasn’t seen this happen? You might think that stinkin’ gecko would understand something like this happening on an insured boat, but nooooooo.....
The only thing I remember? When any version of this sap song is played at a party or a simple visit to a friend is; “TIME TO GO HONEY!”
I have it on CD and remember the song.
